Football: HP a no-show at 7-on-7 event by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Publisher's Note: A follow-up to this blog item was published on June 21. Click here to read the explanation for HP not appearing at this tournament. The original post is below. - Scott Farrell

CEDAR HILL - HP didn't show up at the 7-on-7 tournament out at Cedar Hill. Three other teams also decided not to make the trip, turning what was supposed to be a 16-team bracket into a 12-team event. The Red Bull Game Breakers staff were not informed of the teams' plans prior to the start of the tournament.

HP's next 7-on-7 competition is in its June summer league, which has moved to Jesuit on Monday nights due to construction at Highlander Stadium. The Scots begin play at 6 p.m. Monday, June 14, at Jesuit.

Football: 7-on-7 league begins Mon. by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP's summer 7-on-7 football league begins Monday at Highlander Stadium.

The Scots will play three games each night from 6-6:25, 6:30-6:55, and 7-7:25 against teams from Jesuit, W.T. White and Bishop Lynch. There will only be varsity-level games. The league continues each Monday night in June.

The 7-on-7 league has no-contact rules designed to place the emphasis on the quarterback and passing game. Running plays are not allowed unless the quarterback is forced to scramble. Defenders gain experience defending the pass on every down.

HP will also play in a 7-0n-7 tournament next Friday, June 11, at Cedar Hill High School as a qualifier to a regional Red Bull tournament at the Cotton Bowl on June 25.

Kershaw: no decision, but gets 8 K's by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

It was far from the best outing of the season for Clayton Kershaw on Friday, but the lefty did enough to keep the Dodgers in the game in what became a 5-4 win for LA over Atlanta. The ex-HP pitcher struck out eight in 6 2/3 innings, and allowed three earned runs on a four-hit performance. His five walks given up are among his highest totals of the season.

Kershaw was also 1-of-3 at the plate, and scored a run, coming all the way around on a triple by Rafael Furcal. It was the second run scored this season by Kershaw, who is batting .100 (2-of-20).

Kershaw's earned-run average is at 3.06 for the season.

Baseball: HP is only team to dent Wakeland by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
One of the things I noticed (and I'm not alone) about Frisco Wakeland during their bi-district playoff series against HP was that the Wolverines hit the ball well. It doesn't always fall into the gaps or hit the outfield wall, but those guys put the bats on the balls very well and put the ball in play.

They've got Rockwall-Heath down, 1-0, as they conclude their Region II-4A Final tonight at Dallas Baptist.

Teams that put the ball in play make it more difficult for defenses, as we saw with HP and its combined seven errors in three games. And Wakeland's been on an amazing roll since beating the Scots, 2-1, in their three-game series. Rockwall-Heath had two errors against Frisco Wakeland in their Game 1.

It's worth noting that HP is the only team this postseason to beat Wakeland, which had to win a district playoff just to make the playoffs. Here are the Wolverines' results during the playoffs:

Bi-District
Frisco Wakeland 10, HP 5
HP 2, Frisco Wakeland 0
Frisco Wakeland 9, HP 8

Area
Frisco Wakeland 8, North Dallas 2
Frisco Wakeland 17, North Dallas 4

Sectionals
Frisco Wakeland 4, Rockwall 1
Frisco Wakeland 10, Rockwall 7

Regional Semifinals
Frisco Wakeland 4, Waco Midway 3
Frisco Wakeland 6, Waco Midway 1

Regional Final
Frisco Wakeland 14, Rockwall-Heath 6
Game 2: tonight at Dallas Baptist, 5 p.m.
Game 3, if necessary, follows Game 2

Football: HP in on 7-on-7 tourney by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

HP hasn't done much in the past with the summertime 7-on-7 football seasons that have become increasingly popular the past 10 years. The Scots usually keep to themselves and a six-team league with high schools in Richardson ISD and Jesuit plus a few others.

No so next week when HP enters a 16-team field competing in the Red Bull Game Breakers 7-on-7 Tournament at Cedar Hill. The Scots are in the Dallas-Fort Worth area qualifier on Friday, June 11, hosted by Cedar Hill, and will compete in a field that also includes Class 5A schools Arlington Martin, DeSoto, Denton Guyer, Keller, Colleyville Heritage, Duncanville, Garland, Arlington and Hebron; and Class 4A teams from Lancaster, West Mesquite, A. Maceo Smith and Lincoln. The games will be from 7-10 p.m. at Cedar Hill's Longhorn Stadium.

The top two teams from D/FW and five other regionals spanning three states will advance to play in the Cotton Bowl in the Red Bull finals from 7 - 11:30 p.m. on June 25. The Oklahoma qualifier is Sunday in Stillwater, with others in Houston (next Tuesday), San Antonio (June 15) and Austin (June 18). New Orleans St. Augustine and New Orleans Edna Karr, a charter school, have already claimed the two Louisiana qualifying spots.

Alumni: HP pair at TCU regional by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Two former Scots return to the area this weekend when Baylor plays at the TCU sub-regional in the NCAA baseball championships. Joey Hainsfurther, a former all-state shortstop at HP, is now a second baseman at Baylor. Crayton Bare is a freshman pitcher for the Bears (34-22), who open the tournament at 2 p.m. Friday facing Arizona (33-22).
TCU (46-11) takes on Lamar (35-24) at 7 p.m. Friday at TCU's Lupton Stadium.

Hainsfurther has started in 52 games this season, and is hitting .341 with 47 RBI, which ranks second on the team in both categories. Bare has appeared in four games for Baylor.

The double-elimination sub-regional continues Saturday and possibly Sunday depending on the results. TCU and Baylor are the favorites to advance.

Kershaw: Defense helps in 4-3 win by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

HP-ex Clayton Kershaw lasted through a rough 30-pitch first inning, and the Dodgers' defense had one of its better outings in LA's 4-3 win at Colorado. Kershaw got the win with hits five-inning start cut short by manager Joe Torre. Kershaw struck out nine and gave up only four hits and two earned runs.

He also lowered his earned-run average to 2.95, after starting May with an ERA above four.
