Kershaw suspended following ejection by Scott Farrell Comment (1)

Clayton Kershaw has been suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount in addition to being ejected from Tuesday night's game at Dodger Stadium. MLB vice president Bob  Watson issued the suspension to the ex-HP hurler for "intentionally throwing at" Aaron Rowland of the San Francisco Giants in the seventh inning of LA's 7-5 loss. Kershaw will appeal the suspension, which will keep him scheduled for his next start in the Dodgers' rotation Sunday against the New York Mets.

"I can't comment," Kershaw said in an MLB.com story. Kershaw received a standing ovation from the crowd as he left field following the ejection. "Yeah, I heard it. It was great."

Below is the link to the complete story, along with a video package of what led to  ejections, from MLB.com.

Kershaw ejected in Dodgers' loss by Scott Farrell Comment (1)

If it wasn't his best outing of the season, perhaps Tuesday's game was the most dramatic of Clayton Kershaw's short career in the majors. Kershaw earned an ejection at the start of the seventh inning for hitting Aaron Rowland in the hip with the first pitch of the seventh inning. It was Kershaw's second bean of the game, as he hit Andres Torres in the first at-bat of the game.

It was the first ejection in Kershaw's career, and he left the field to a standing ovation. LA manager Joe Torre was also tossed. Here's more from the MLB.com story by Evan Drillich.

Park Cities residents Fin and Charlie Ewing won their flight in the Texas Golf Association's Father-Son Championship last weekend at Miramont Country Club in Bryan. The Ewing duo shot net scores of 62-66-66 to win.

Charlie Ewing, a stalwart as part of three HP state-champion golf teams, is a rising sophomore on the men's golf team at Vanderbilt.

HP's Scheffler 3rd at AJGA event by Scott Farrell Comment (1)

Incoming HP freshman Scott Scheffler, 14, placed in another prestigious tournament over the weekend, parlaying his recent success after a runner-up finish at the Byron Nelson Junior Championships last month.

Scheffler, 14, finished third in the Charles Howell III Junior  Championship last weekend. The tournament is an American Junior Golf Association event at West Lake Country Club in Augusta, Ga. Scheffler closed at 1-under-par 215, four strokes behind Dru Love, the son of PGA Tour veteran Davis Love III.

Alumni: Sepulveda spotted at HPHS by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
I went by Highlander Stadium today to take a first-hand look at the work being done there, and couldn't help but notice the high-arching punts that were flying around the field. His 6-3 frame certainly didn't look like any high school player out there, and we haven't seen consistent 50-yard punts with four-second hang time in that stadium in a while.

Sure enough, former HP player and current Pittsburgh Steelers punter Daniel Sepulveda was working out solo on the Highlander turf during the noontime heat. I had a great visit, albeit brief, with the former HP reserve player who discovered punting while trying to be a walk-on linebacker at Baylor.

It doesn't seem like eight years have passed since the 2002 graduate was with the Scots. He didn't want me to shoot any video of him punting during the workout, and declined to have his picture taken. OK, so I offer the official picture from the Steelers' website above.

Sepulveda reports to the Steelers' training camp in two weeks in Latrobe, Pa. He says there's been no complications from the knee surgery that kept him out of the 2008 season, and as of now the Steelers have not invited any other punters to camp.

The Steelers and Sepulveda open the preseason against another HP grad, Matthew Stafford, hosting Detroit at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 14. The NFL Network will replay the game during  the week. Pittsburgh plays on national television four times, including on Halloween night, hosting Super Bowl champion New Orleans.

Kershaw to open LA's 2nd half by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Dodgers manager Joe Torre didn't say there's been a shuffle in LA's rotation, but he did announce today that ex-HP pitcher Clayton Kershaw will be on the mound when the Dodgers open the second half of the season on Thursday in St. Louis.

LA's  Hiroki Kuroda (7-7, 3.87 earned-run average) had been the No. 1 starter in the rotation for most of the first half of the season, with Kershaw (9-4, 2.96 ERA) second. As of Monday, Kuroda is slotted into the third spot in the four-game series in St. Louis.

Whether this marks a pitching rotation change still remains in question, especially since Torre continues to ease Kershaw along with strict pitch counts and a few quick yanks this season.

LA (49-39) is tied for second place in the National League West at the All-Star Break, two games behind San Diego.

Kershaw not among NL All-Stars by Scott Farrell Comment (1)

Clayton Kershaw missed the National League All-Star team despite having credentials worthy of consideration. Kershaw's 116 strikeouts rank fifth in the NL, his eight wins are tied for ninth, and his earned-run average of 3.02 ranks 14th.

Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel selected the NL's pitching staff, and perhaps his miss on Kershaw was due to unfamiliarity. Kershaw hasn't faced Manuel's Phillies this season.

Here's an interesting point - the American League will feature six left-handed batters in its starting lineup, but Manuel has only one left-handed pitcher (Arthur Rhodes) in its entire pitching lineup. Kershaw, of course, is a lefty.

Kershaw earns win No. 8 at Arizona by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Clayton Kershaw earned his eighth win of this season Saturday in the Dodgers' 14-1 laugher at Arizona. The ex-HP hurler, now 8-4 on the season, pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and struck out eight against only two walks.

LA was ahead 11-0 when Kershaw retired. He has held opponents to three earned runs or less for the 15th time in his last 17 starts.

"He had 105 pitches and that was enough for me," LA manager Joe Torre was quoted in the MLB game story. "I don't see any reason for more than that in this kind of game."

Kershaw wanted to stay longer, but Torre instead called on rookie Travis Schlichting, promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque earlier in the day, in relief.

The left-handed Kershaw remains a prime contender for a spot on the National League All-Star team that will be announced today (Sunday). His 116 strikeouts rank fifth in the NL, his eight wins are tied for ninth, and his earned-run average of 3.02 ranks 14th.

Baseball: Scotland Yard Classic expands by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
One of Fred Oliver's goals for the 2011 season was to expand HP's annual Scotland Yard Classic to a 16-team field and become one of the area's, if not the region's, top tournaments. Oliver is halfway to achieving that expansion.

A message on the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association message board has Oliver requesting one more team to fill out what should be a 12-team field for the 2011 Classic. Having the Field Turf all-weather surface at Scotland Yard in place, and securing an agreement with Jesuit to use its Field Turf field to host part of the tournament made expanding the field easier logistically.

The Scotland Yard has been an eight-team field since its inception, and Hillcrest and TCA-Addison have co-hosted parts of the brackets in the past. The 2010 field included TCA-Addison, Sachse, Midland, Klein Oak, Longview, Keller and Rowlett.

Next season's Scotland Yard Classic is March 10-12, 2011.

HP's postseason accolades continued last week with the announcement that five Scots had earned Class 4A All-State honors from the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association.

Senior shortstop JB Gadd, senior utility player and designated hitter Trey Laidlaw, senior infielder Cody Walker, senior infielder and pitcher Clark Wilson and senior outfielder Ben Zieman each made the 64-man team.

Senior third baseman Ryan Gros earlier earned second-team honors on the THSBCA's Class 4A All-State team.
