Volleyball: Lady Scots win tourney pool by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP coach Michael Dearman just checked in that the Lady Scots swept their three opponents in pool play Friday afternoon at the Byron Nelson Classic. HP (10-3) won over Cedar Park, Mesquite Poteet and Dumas, and advances into the championship bracket where it will face Frisco Liberty at 8 a.m. Saturday in the main gym at Nelson HS.

A win there would advance the Lady Scots to the quarterfinals to face either Friendswood or Santa Fe at 11 a.m. A loss would send HP into the consolation bracket to face the Friendswood-Santa Fe loser, also at 11 a.m.

Here is the championship bracket schedule for Saturday morning:

Keller Central vs. Waxahachie, 9:30 a.m.
HP vs. Frisco Liberty, 8 a.m.

Friendswood vs. Santa Fe, 8 a.m.
Waco Midway vs. Austin Lake Travis, 8 a.m.

Red Oak vs Magnolia, 9:30 a.m.
Hereford vs Dumas, 9:30 a.m.

Austin Lake Travis is the state's top-ranked team this week. Friendswood is No. 5, joining No. 7 HP and No. 9 Waco Midway in the championship bracket. Canyon Randall, ranked fourth and the tournament's defending champion, placed third in its pool behind Keller Central and Red Oak.

Team Tennis: Scots open season by Scott Farrell Comment (2)

The defending state champion HP tennis team opens the 2010 season on Friday hosting its annual HP/Plano West Fall Tournament. The Scots have 18 players returning from last season's perfect 16-0 season that won a second consecutive UIL title.

The 16-team bracket contains an entirely Class 5A field except for HP and Richardson Pearce. Lubbock Coronado, which reached the state semifinals last season, is included in the field along with local stalwarts Plano West, Plano, Allen, Coppell and Flower Mound Marcus. Three of the UIL's four regions are represented in the field.

Here are the first-round matchups for Friday and their various locations. HP will host one semifinal and the championship match Saturday at the HP Outdoor Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.

The construction is done at Highlander Fieldhouse, and just in time to move next Tuesday's HP volleyball matches back on campus from the HP Middle School. The fieldhouse underwent a facelift in addition to some additional construction during the spring and summer.

HP, 7-3 and ranked in the state's top 10 teams heading into this weekend's Bryon Nelson Classic, hosts a tri-meet with McKinney Boyd and Flower Mound Marcus beginning at 5 p.m. at Highlander on Tuesday.

Volleyball: HP moves into state's top 10 by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
The coaches around the state looked favorably upon HP's strong showing at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions. So much so that the Texas Girls Coaches Association moved the Lady Scots into the state rankings at No. 7 this week. HP was not a part of the TGCA's preseason poll.

The Lady Scots' 7-2 record is their best start to the season in head coach Michael Dearman's eight seasons here. HP plays at Plano West at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Richardson Pearce is the only other team from Region II-4A in the state poll. Here is the TGCA's top-10 rankings for the week:

Texas Girls Coaches Association
Class 4A State Poll, Aug. 16, 2010
1. Austin Lake Travis
2. Richardson Pearce
3. Houston Stratford
4. Canyon Randall
5. Friendswood
6. Mont Belview Barbers Hill
7. HP
8. San Antonio Alamo Heights
9. Waco Midway
10. Richmond Foster

Volleyball: A top-10 finish at T of C by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

HP went undefeated through three matches today, and finished with the consolation bracket's Silver Division championship at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions.

The 5-2 finish at the DTOC was HP's best in coach Michael Dearman's seven years at the school, and the Lady Scots' 7-2 record is also the program's best during his tenure. Dearman said it is also the first time that HP has exited the tournament with a win.

There's more coverage on the home pages. HP's next match is at 7 p.m. at Plano West, which took fifth at the DTOC this weekend.

Volleyball: Lady Scots 2-2 in first day by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I just got back from Duncanville, where HP finished with a split of four games at the prestigious Tournament of Champions. The Lady Scots won the opener to move to 3-0, as you read on this blog earlier in the day, then dropped two straight to Magnolia and Houston Clear Lake, before rallying with a sweep of Stephenville.

HP will face either Arlington Martin or Colleyville Heritage at 10 a.m. in the Sandra Meadows Arena on Saturday. A win there would advance them to the Consolation Silver Division semifinals at 1 p.m. to face the winner between Arlington and San Angelo.

Check the home page for a recap of the day's volleyball events.

Alumni: HP duo face each other on TV by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Now that the Cowboys are done with their first two preseason games, here's a note regarding another NFL topic that's close to home.

Stafford poseSepulveda mugHP has two alumni who are playing in the NFL right now, and they'll face each other tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. CST. Matthew Stafford begins his second season with the Detroit Lions playing at the Pittsburgh Steelers, where Daniel Sepulveda has the punting job anchored down for another season.

Stafford may not play much, but we would expect Sepulveda to perform on each punt since the Steelers don't have any other punters on the roster.

The NFL Network will carry a tape-delayed broadcast of the game at 9 a.m. Sunday; 6 a.m. Monday, and 3 p.m. Tuesday. If anyone has Sirius satellite radio, Sirius Channel 121 will air the game live.

I just got word that HP has won its opening match at the Duncanville Tournament of Champions, 25-7, 25-23, over League City Clear Springs.

The Lady Scots, still undefeated to this moment at 3-0, now face Class 4A team Magnolia in the second round at noon. The winner advances to the semifinals of one of Texas' most prestigious tournaments.

I'm headed out to Duncanville now and will have a complete report on the day's events tonight.
