SMU: Morstead making an impact in N.O. by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

All SMU football fans will remember Thomas Morstead, the Mustangs' kicker for three years and one of the truly great guys on the teams of past seasons. The New Orleans Saints traded up to get Morstead in the fifth round of last spring's NFL draft, and the move is paying off. The rookie punter is now handling kickoffs as well and is tied for the NFL lead with nine touchbacks on kickoffs.

Strange - he never kicked off at SMU or in high school, and started doing it on a whim for the Saints in the final preseason game. The New Orleans newspaper wrote a great update feature on him Wednesday that SMU fans will enjoy reading.

SMU-SFA sold out by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I must admit I didn't see this coming. Didn't put it in the realm of possibilities. But good for them.

SMU has sold out its opener Saturday against Stephen F. Austin. It's the result of a months-long campaign called Sellout 2009, and congratulations to the athletic staff for pulling it off, even if it took a few giveaways to do it.

SMU officials are asking fans to wear white to the game, by the way. Never mind the school colors - wear white, they say.

Kickoff is at  7 p.m. Saturday at SMU's Ford Stadium.

And there's no better time to talk about SMU football than the preseason, especially since no one's sure what June Jones and the Mustangs will provide this fall. At least they're off to a good start - three Mustangs were selected to the preseason All-CUSA team by the conference's media crew. Here's the release from SMU:
