Soccer: Weekend schedules altered by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

The boys' soccer tournament in Waxahachie scheduled for this weekend has been canceled except for its Saturday games due to the freezing weather and possible negative-temperature wind chills expected to hit the area on Thursday.

The junior varsity soccer tournaments that would have opened the seasons for the boys' and girls' teams have been canceled entirely.

There is no word yet on the status of the varsity's HP Girls Tournament that begins tomorrow night at Highlander Stadium.

G-Basketball: Updated state rankings by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

HP fans don't have to look or go very far to see the state's best teams. Girls Basketball: HP wins at home by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Kaitlyn Read erupted for a career-high 24 points, and HP came back from a five-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter for a key 62-56 win over Richardson Pearce at Highlander Fieldhouse.

The win keeps HP in a tie for second place in District 10-4A with a 2-1 record, one game behind Rockwall. Guard and wing play were essential for the Lady Scots. Sydney McDaniel and Katherine Krause each scored nine points, and Hartley Hobson had eight among other HP scoring.

The Lady Scots are 9-6 on the season, and will take part of the holidays off before facing nationally-ranked Irving MacArthur in the first round of the Dallas ISD/Coca-Cola Tournament on Dec. 28.

HP fans don't have to look or go very far to see the state's best teams. Go north (No. 3 Frisco and No. 10 Frisco Wakeland), west (No. 2 Mansfield Timberview), east (No. 4 West Mesquite and No. 8 Rockwall) or south (No. 6 Waxahachie or No. 9 Waco Midway) and you'll find a team in the surrounding counties that is ranked in the top 10 of this week's TABC poll.

Region II has an amazing six of the top 10 teams in this week's Class 4A poll. There are eight Region II teams in the top 25, and three from District 9-4A, which HP's district will face in the first round of the playoffs. HP (8-6) is not ranked in this week's poll.

Girls Basketball: A win in 10-4A opener by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Hartley Hobson scored a double-double, and HP held Carrollton Smith scoreless for the first few minutes of the second half as the Lady Scots (8-5, 1-0) won both teams' District 10-4A opener at Highlander Fieldhouse.

Hobson scored four field goals, including a three-pointer, and four free throws to score 12 of HP's 26 first-half points. The Lady Scots ran off a 7-2 run after taking a 13-11 lead after the first quarter, and their transition game provided a handful of easy baskets. HP held Smith to only two field goals in the second quarter, and had a 26-16 halftime lead.

HP's defense continued into the fourth quarter, keeping Smith without a field goal for 4:30 spanning the third and fourth quarters. Katherine Krause sank two field goals in the fourth quarter, and Sydney McDaniel had a three-pointer to go with two put-backs by Dabney Rice to extend the lead to 21 at one point.

HP travels to Greenville for a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday.

HP (7-5) isn't ranked in either of the Class 4A state polls this week, but plenty of other Region II teams are. In the TABC poll, six of the top 10 teams, and eight of the top 25, hail from Region II. HP's District 10-4A faces 9-4A teams in the first round of the state playoffs.

Cr. Country: Sutherland named Athlete of the Year by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

The Texas Girls Coaches Association named HP senior Sara Sutherland as its Class 5A/4A Cross Country Athlete of the Year. Sutherland finished eighth at last month's UIL Championships, and has placed in the top 10 in the state all four years. She won the state title as a sophomore.

HP has had an individual compete at the UIL Championships for 34 consecutive seasons, going back to the program's initial season in 1975. Sutherland's honor marks the first time an HP athlete has been selected as the cross country athlete of the year.
