Team Tennis: HP No. 1 in the state by Scott Farrell Comment (5)
It's a position the Scots are accustomed to being in. Actually, expected based on results from the past decade.

Once again HP (6-0, 2-0) is the top-ranked tennis team in the state in the first state poll published by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. The Scots swept their four matches in their tournament to open the season and took impressive wins over three teams that were ranked in the TTCA's Class 5A top 10 - No. 3 San Angelo Central (10-1), No. 4 Lubbock Coronado (10-0) and No. 9 McKinney Boyd (10-2).

The Scots are one of only three Region II-4A teams ranked in the top 10, and there are only six Region II teams in this week's top 25. District 10-4A mate McKinney North is No. 12.

Field hockey: Friday games canceled by Scott Farrell Comment (3)
Due to heavy rains in the area, the field crew at Hockaday will not be able to stripe the field today, which has canceled Friday's schedule for the Hockaday Festival. Saturday's schedule is still on but will have changes from its original posting but has not been announced.

It is another day when HP's field hockey team must wait to open the season.  Tuesday's game at Hockaday, which was the season-opener for the Scots, was also postponed due to rain.

Field hockey: Festival schedule set by Scott Farrell Comment (4)
It may be muddy out there, but the Hockaday Field Hockey Festival schedule has been set. HP's Gold (varsity) and Blue (junior varsity) teams are set to start their season Friday afternoon after rain already postponed their scheduled opener yesterday at Hockaday.

The Hockaday Festival is a series of short 20-minutes games that provide a warm-up of sorts to the season and allows for multiple contests in a short period of two days.

More than 40 girls have come out for the Scots' club team, which will play a nine-game match schedule along with two tournaments through the end of October.

Here is HP's schedule for the Hockaday Festival:

HP Gold
Fri., Sept. 10:
3:50 - 4:10 p.m. -- HP Gold vs. Austin St. Stephens, Field #4
6:20 - 6:40 p.m. -- HP Gold vs. Houston St. John's Red, Field #4

Sat., Sept. 11:
11:00 -- 11:40 a.m. -- HP Gold vs. The Woodlands, Field #4
2:00 - 2:40 p.m. -- HP Gold vs. Austin St. Andrews, Field #2
4:15 - 4:55 p.m. -- HP Gold vs. Houston Duchesne, Field #5

HP Blue
Fri., Sept. 10:
4:40 - 5:00 p.m. -- HP Blue vs. Arlington  Oakridge, Field #5
6:20 - 6:40 p.m. - HP Blue vs. Hockaday, Field #2

Volleyball: Lady Scots up to No. 7 by Scott Farrell Comment (1)
HP's volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's state poll published by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. The Lady Scots (17-12) were 1-2 last week, with the two losses coming to two state-ranked Class 5A teams. HP passed former No. 7 Red Oak, which lost to No. 12 Aledo last week. HP swept Red Oak in its first match of the season.

HP hosts Southlake Carroll at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and opens District 10-4A play at home against Rockwall-Heath at 7 p.m. Friday. Here is this week's poll:

Volleyball: HP falls one spot in poll by Scott Farrell Comment (2)
HP reached the championship of the Silver Division at last weekend's Pearland Tournament, and the state's coaches noticed. The Lady Scots (16-10) stayed in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's state poll this week, but fell one spot to No. 8. Brenham, previously unranked, entered the poll at No. 5.

The Lady Scots have a tough week ahead, facing Hebron, which is the No. 2-ranked team in Class 5A this week, and Flower Mound Marcus, ranked No. 12 in 5A, in a double-dual on Tuesday. Marcus beat the Lady Scots in five sets in a dual last week. HP plays at Plano East on Friday.

The TGCA published a top 15 for this week's poll. The results:

Volleyball: HP wins again by Scott Farrell Comment (1)
HP has advanced to the semifinals of the Silver Division bracket at the Pearland Tournament with a tough 25-18, 14-25, 25-20 win over Fort Bend Travis. The Lady Scots (15-9) will play the winner between Cypress Ranch and Fort Bend Clements in the semfinals. The other two semifinalists are Lake Highlands and New Braunfels.

In the championship bracket, Richardson Pearce, ranked No. 2 in the state, knocked off  No. 1 Austin Lake Travis in the quarterfinals. Pearce will face Hebron, which is on the Scots' schedule for a Tuesday match next week, in the semifinals. Flower Mound Marcus, which beat HP in a match last Tuesday, is also in the championship semifinals.

I just got word that HP has won again down in Pearland, a 25-18, 25-19 win over Plano in the second round of the Silver Division bracket.

HP (14-9) will face Fort Bend Travis at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Silver quarterfinals. The tournament continues with at least one more match later in the afternoon.

Volleyball: HP 1-2 in Pearland today by Scott Farrell Comment (1)
HP went 1-2 in pool play matches today in the opening rounds of the Pearland Tournament, but played its two losses about as close as they come.

Just two days after losing close to Plano West in five sets, the Lady Scots (12-9) fell in their opener, 25-19, 26-24, to Colleyville Heritage. HP came back to sweep Deer Park, 25-17, 25-11, and end a five-match losing streak. And in the final pool play match, playing for a spot in the Gold Division (championship) bracket, HP fell to The Woodlands, 24-26, 30-29, 25-23. The Woodlands is ranked No. 8 in this week's coaches' state poll.

It is worth noting again the competition that HP is playing. Four of the losses during the five-game losing streak that HP endured into this tournament came against teams that either qualified for the Gold Division in Pearland, or are playing matches early Friday to play-into the Gold Division. Plano West is the exception, and they aren't playing in Pearland this weekend.

The Lady Scots play again Friday morning at 11 a.m. against the winner between Midlothian and Jersey Village. Both are Class 5A programs.

Volleyball: HP stays at No. 7 in state by Scott Farrell Comment (2)
It's not whether you lose or not, it's who you lose to that determines most of the state rankings in volleyball. Or so it appears in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association state poll. HP stayed at No. 7 in this week's poll after a 4-2 finish at the Byron Nelson Classic. The two losses came to No. 3 Magnolia, which debuts in the poll and claims two of HP's five losses this season, and No. 4 Friendswood.

Austin Lake Travis, which dominated the field at the Nelson Classic, remains the top-ranked team. Richardson Pearce stayed at No. 2 after a strong showing at the Allen Open. Pearce, No. 6 Red Oak (which HP swept to start the season) and HP are the only Region II-4A teams to receive votes this week.

The tough competition doesn't stop for the Lady Scots (11-5), who host Flower Mound Marcus and McKinney Boyd at Highlander Fieldhouse in a double-dual starting at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Marcus is ranked No. 9 in this week's Class 5A state poll.
