Matthew Stafford's status for the next game is uncertain after he left Detroit's season opener against Chicago with a right shoulder injury following a blindside sack by the Bears' Julius Peppers. For the JV Gold football parents making the road trip to Burleson tonight, here are the directions. For what it's worth, the two longest road trips to watch any HP football team at any level are today and tomorrow. The JV Gold's trip to Burleson Centennial measures at 51 miles, just short of the 59 miles the HP varsity will go to play at Sherman on Friday night. The Scots maintained their No. 6 ranking in this week's Associated Press state football poll, though they lost six votes in their point total from a week ago. HP (1-0) took advantage of two losses by teams ahead of them in the state poll, and moved up three spots to No. 6 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A poll. The Scots (1-0) doubled their vote count from the preseason poll, garnering 118 votes and are now the highest-ranked team in Region II-4A. Football: JV Gold smashes Rockwall

The JV Gold Scots scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and ran two kickoff returns back for touchdowns in a 60-7 dismantling of Rockwall in their season opener at Highlander Stadium. Jet Tuma ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the first half, and 10 different players scored for HP.

The JV Blue team made up of varsity reserve players beat Everman tonight, 22-6, in their season-opener at Highlander Stadium. Alex Keeton scored on HP's first play from scrimmage on a 34-yard run. Hardy Davis made it 9-0 with a safety after sacking the Everman quarterback in the end zone.

Charles Hubbard caught a nice 8-yard fade pass from Scott Ellerman for a 15-0 lead, and Keeton added a one-yard plunge in the third quarter to account for the Blue's scoring. Sam Hayward kicked two ext [...]

I just got back from the scrimmage, where the Scots played even with Plano West. It was a starting-quarterback debut for Jake Howeth, who was sharp from the outset. The senior hit eight straight passes during the first portion of the controlled scrimmage, and connected on 8 of his first 9. William Morris turned a normal out-pattern into a 46-yard touchdown to put HP into the end zone on their first possession. One last reminder for anyone going as well:

The two freshman teams will be scrimmage on the grass fields immediately south of Clark Stadium. Both teams will scrimmage beginning at 5 p.m.

The JV Gold team (sophomores) will scrimmage at 5 p.m. in Clark Stadium.
The JV Blue team (juniors) will scrimmage at 6 p.m. in Clark Stadium.

Former HP quarterback Luke Woodley is transferring to Texas A&M. The Aggies were among the schools recruiting Woodley while he was leading the Scots to 11-2 seasons the past two years.

Woodley signed with Louisville last fall and graduated ahead of his class in December in order to enroll at the school in time [...]

I'm on my way to Iowa to visit family, and went straight up Highway 75 headed north. As we went through Sherman, I took a look at Bearcat Stadium, home to the Sherman Bearcats and site of HP's non-district game on Sept. 10. I did a double-take when on first glance the stadium's playing surface looked like pure dirt.

Sure enough, on the second glance there was no green grass to be found on what has been one of the few natural grass fields still left in the area. No yellow grass or any [...]

I went by Highlander Stadium today to take a first-hand look at the work being done there, and couldn't help but notice the high-arching punts that were flying around the field. His 6-3 frame certainly didn't look like any high school player out there, and we haven't seen consistent 50-yard punts with four-second hang time in that stadium in a while.

Football: Weather cancels 7-on-7 tonight

Lightning in the area, along with flash storms, has canceled tonight's 7-on-7 league games at Jesuit. The games will not be made up, meaning the Scots' summer 7-on-7 schedule is over.

The football team's summer workouts continue with the Performance Course at Highlander Stadium. The first day of official team workouts is just six weeks away on Aug. 9.

Lone Star Cup: HP finishes 5th

HP slipped to fifth in the final Lone Star Cup standings, as two teams passed the Scots with top finishes in the state baseball and softball playoffs earlier this month. The UIL's Lone Star Cup honors the state's top athletic and academic schools each year.

The Scots earned 84 points through scoring from athletics, band, fine arts and academic competitions. Friendswood won its second consecutive Lone Star Cup with 100 points, edging Austin Lake Travis (94 points). The two teams were [...]

The scene at Jesuit Prep School on Monday afternoon looked just like a regular HP football practice, minus the helmets, and the pads, and the field turf, and a handful of coaches working inside the huddles.

Instead of 90 or so players crammed onto one field, four teams of seven players fit well onto two 45-yard fields for another round of 7-on-7 work. HP had the bulk of its skill-position players on hand for the third week in the four-week June schedule.

I found HP head football coach Randy Allen at Monday's 7-on-7 games, and he said the Scots were never officially invited to the Red Bull Game Breakers 7-on-7 tournament two weeks ago.

I reported earlier this month that HP was a no-show at the event. My apologies for the misleading wording. Allen said he informed tourney organizers earlier this month that most of the players would be out of town and unavailable for the June 11 event, and thought that concluded HP's involvement.

Dallas, uh, make that Arlington, will host the UIL state championship football games in December, as the UIL made it official today that the Class 5A-3A title games will be played at Cowboys Stadium. The 2010 season marks the first time all conference championship football games will be played at a pre-determined location. Preseason football officially began today as Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine hit the newsstands across the state. The unofficial Bible of high school and college football has HP ranked No. 9 in the state, and the district coaches picked the Scots to repeat as District 10-4A champions again this fall.
