Alumni: Stafford suffers injury

Matthew Stafford's status for the next game is uncertain after he left Detroit's season opener against Chicago with a right shoulder injury following a blindside sack by the Bears' Julius Peppers. Stafford watched from the sideline with his right (throwing) arm in a sling during the second half. Shaun Hill started the rest of the way. The Lions would not say if he had X-rays. Stafford said he will go through tests this week and is not sure if he'll be rea [...]

Team Tennis: HP No. 1 in the state

It's a position the Scots are accustomed to being in. Actually, expected based on results from the past decade. Once again HP (6-0, 2-0) is the top-ranked tennis team in the state in the first state poll published by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. The Scots swept their four matches in their tournament to open the season and took impressive wins over three teams that were ranked in the TTCA's Class 5A top 10 - No. 3 San Angelo Central (10-1), No. 4 Lubbock Coronado (10-0) and No [...]

Field hockey: Friday games canceled

Due to heavy rains in the area, the field crew at Hockaday will not be able to stripe the field today, which has canceled Friday's schedule for the Hockaday Festival. Saturday's schedule is still on but will have changes from its original posting but has not been announced. It is another day when HP's field hockey team must wait to open the season. Tuesday's game at Hockaday, which was the season-opener for the Scots, was also postponed due to rain.

Football: JV directions to Burleson

For the JV Gold football parents making the road trip to Burleson tonight, here are the directions. For what it's worth, the two longest road trips to watch any HP football team at any level are today and tomorrow. The JV Gold's trip to Burleson Centennial measures at 51 miles, just short of the 59 miles the HP varsity will go to play at Sherman on Friday night. At least you'll get to Burleson prior to rush-hour. The JV Gold kicks off at 5:30 p.m. The HP varsity kickoff is at 7:30 p.m [...]

Field hockey: Festival schedule set

It may be muddy out there, but the Hockaday Field Hockey Festival schedule has been set. HP's Gold (varsity) and Blue (junior varsity) teams are set to start their season Friday afternoon after rain already postponed their scheduled opener yesterday at Hockaday. The Hockaday Festival is a series of short 20-minutes games that provide a warm-up of sorts to the season and allows for multiple contests in a short period of two days. More than 40 girls have come out for the Scots' clu [...]

Football: HP holds at No. 6 in state

The Scots maintained their No. 6 ranking in this week's Associated Press state football poll, though they lost six votes in their point total from a week ago. Austin Lake Travis (2-0) continues to sit atop the poll, as has the state's top matchup this week as it takes on No. 2 Aledo on Friday. How big is the game? It's being played at UT's Royal-Memorial Stadium in Austin instead of campus sites. The top nine teams stayed in place from last week, and Cedar Park (2-0) moved into the top 10 [...]

HP's volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's state poll published by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. The Lady Scots (17-12) were 1-2 last week, with the two losses coming to two state-ranked Class 5A teams. HP passed former No. 7 Red Oak, which lost to No. 12 Aledo last week. HP swept Red Oak in its first match of the season. HP hosts Southlake Carroll at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and opens District 10-4A play at home against Rockwall-Heath at 7 p.m. Friday.
HP (1-0) took advantage of two losses by teams ahead of them in the state poll, and moved up three spots to No. 6 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A poll. The Scots (1-0) doubled their vote count from the preseason poll, garnering 118 votes and are now the highest-ranked team in Region II-4A. Here is this week's top-10 poll, which ScotSports.com has expanded into a top 20 based upon other teams receiving votes. Associated PressClass 4A Poll, Aug. 31
1.
HP reached the championship of the Silver Division at last weekend's Pearland Tournament, and the state's coaches noticed. The Lady Scots (16-10) stayed in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's state poll this week, but fell one spot to No. 8. Brenham, previously unranked, entered the poll at No. 5. The Lady Scots have a tough week ahead, facing Hebron, which is the No. 2-ranked team in Class 5A this week, and Flower Mound Marcus, ranked No. 12 in 5A, in a double-dual on Tuesday.

The JV Blue team made up of varsity reserve players beat Everman tonight, 22-6, in their season-opener at Highlander Stadium. Alex Keeton scored on HP's first play from scrimmage on a 34-yard run. Hardy Davis made it 9-0 with a safety after sacking the Everman quarterback in the end zone.

Charles Hubbard caught a nice 8-yard fade pass from Scott Ellerman for a 15-0 lead, and Keeton added a one-yard plunge in the third quarter to account for the Blue's scoring.
Volleyball: HP 1-2 in Pearland today

HP went 1-2 in pool play matches today in the opening rounds of the Pearland Tournament, but played its two losses about as close as they come. Just two days after losing close to Plano West in five sets, the Lady Scots (12-9) fell in their opener, 25-19, 26-24, to Colleyville Heritage. HP came back to sweep Deer Park, 25-17, 25-11, and end a five-match losing streak.
Volleyball: HP stays at No. 7 in state

It's not whether you lose or not, it's who you lose to that determines most of the state rankings in volleyball. Or so it appears in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association state poll. HP stayed at No. 7 in this week's poll after a 4-2 finish at the Byron Nelson Classic. The two losses came to No. 3 Magnolia, which debuts in the poll and claims two of HP's five losses this season, and No. 4 Friendswood. Austin Lake Travis, which dominated the field at the Nelson Classic, remains th [...]

The Lady Scots dropped their last two matches at the Byron Nelson Classic, settling for sixth place in the 24-team field. HP beat Frisco Liberty in the first round this morning, then fell to Friendswood in the quarterfinals. Friendswood, from the Houston area and ranked No. 5 in this week's state poll, also beat HP in the championship bracket last season.

Magnolia beat HP, 25-16, 25-19, in the fifth-place game, their second win over HP in a week. HP also fell to Magnolia in the champion [...]

Alumni: Nice column on Stafford

I was running through the Rangers boxscore during a timeout in HP's football scrimmage, and came across this very well-written column on Matthew Stafford. It seems our former Scots quarterback has grown quite a following on Detroit, and the Lions are readily accepting his leadership even though he's only a second-year player. It might have something to do with him coming off the bench with a near-separated shoulder to throw a game-winning touchdown pass last season. That grittiness, which w [...]

Football: Scrimmage update

I just got back from the scrimmage, where the Scots played even with Plano West. It was a starting-quarterback debut for Jake Howeth, who was sharp from the outset. The senior hit eight straight passes during the first portion of the controlled scrimmage, and connected on 8 of his first 9. William Morris turned a normal out-pattern into a 46-yard touchdown to put HP into the end zone on their first possession. It's hard to qualify a scrimmage where each team runs only 10 plays, and unsuccessf [...]
