Alumni: Stafford suffers injury

Matthew Stafford's status for the next game is uncertain after he left Detroit's season opener against Chicago with a right shoulder injury following a blindside sack by the Bears' Julius Peppers. Team Tennis: HP No. 1 in the state

It's a position the Scots are accustomed to being in. Actually, expected based on results from the past decade. Once again HP (6-0, 2-0) is the top-ranked tennis team in the state in the first state poll published by the Texas Tennis Coaches Association. Field hockey: Friday games canceled

Due to heavy rains in the area, the field crew at Hockaday will not be able to stripe the field today, which has canceled Friday's schedule for the Hockaday Festival. Saturday's schedule is still on but will have changes from its original posting but has not been announced. It is another day when HP's field hockey team must wait to open the season. Tuesday's game at Hockaday, which was the season-opener for the Scots, was also postponed due to rain.

For the JV Gold football parents making the road trip to Burleson tonight, here are the directions. For what it's worth, the two longest road trips to watch any HP football team at any level are today and tomorrow. The JV Gold's trip to Burleson Centennial measures at 51 miles, just short of the 59 miles the HP varsity will go to play at Sherman on Friday night. It may be muddy out there, but the Hockaday Field Hockey Festival schedule has been set. HP's Gold (varsity) and Blue (junior varsity) teams are set to start their season Friday afternoon after rain already postponed their scheduled opener yesterday at Hockaday. The Hockaday Festival is a series of short 20-minutes games that provide a warm-up of sorts to the season and allows for multiple contests in a short period of two days. The Scots maintained their No. 6 ranking in this week's Associated Press state football poll, though they lost six votes in their point total from a week ago. HP's volleyball team moved up one spot to No. 7 in this week's state poll published by the Texas Girls Coaches Association. The Lady Scots (17-12) were 1-2 last week, with the two losses coming to two state-ranked Class 5A teams. HP passed former No. 7 Red Oak, which lost to No. 12 Aledo last week. HP (1-0) took advantage of two losses by teams ahead of them in the state poll, and moved up three spots to No. 6 in this week's Associated Press Class 4A poll. The Scots (1-0) doubled their vote count from the preseason poll, garnering 118 votes and are now the highest-ranked team in Region II-4A. HP reached the championship of the Silver Division at last weekend's Pearland Tournament, and the state's coaches noticed. The JV Gold Scots scored touchdowns on their first two possessions and ran two kickoff returns back for touchdowns in a 60-7 dismantling of Rockwall in their season opener at Highlander Stadium. Jet Tuma ran for two touchdowns and threw for another in the first half, and 10 different players scored for HP.

I just got word that HP has won again down in Pearland, a 25-18, 25-19 win over Plano in the second round of the Silver Division bracket.

HP (14-9) will face Fort Bend Travis at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Silver quarterfinals. The tournament continues with at least one more match later in the afternoon.

The Lady Scots (13-9) beat Midlothian, 30-29, 25-20, to move into the second round of the Silver Division bracket at the Pearland Invitational. HP will play Plano at 2 p.m., with the winner moving on to the quarterfinals. The tournament continues through Saturday.

The JV Blue team made up of varsity reserve players beat Everman tonight, 22-6, in their season-opener at Highlander Stadium. Alex Keeton scored on HP's first play from scrimmage on a 34-yard run. Hardy Davis made it 9-0 with a safety after sacking the Everman quarterback in the end zone.

HP went 1-2 in pool play matches today in the opening rounds of the Pearland Tournament, but played its two losses about as close as they come. The Lady Scots dropped their last two matches at the Byron Nelson Classic, settling for sixth place in the 24-team field. HP beat Frisco Liberty in the first round this morning, then fell to Friendswood in the quarterfinals. I just got back from the scrimmage, where the Scots played even with Plano West. It was a starting-quarterback debut for Jake Howeth, who was sharp from the outset. The senior hit eight straight passes during the first portion of the controlled scrimmage, and connected on 8 of his first 9.
