Football: Season ends with playoff loss by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

The game featured multiple turns, comebacks, achievements and rallying points, but HP lost  Friday night's regional semifinal playoff against Waxahachie, 49-35, at Kincaide Stadium.

The Scots, who finish the season 11-2, never led in the and had to come back to tie three times, but could not climb over the hump. Luke Woodley finished his outstanding quarterbacking career at HP with a 302-yard night with a touchdown and an interception. Chris Hipps (108 yards with a touchdown) and Josh Francis (106) each topped 100 yards receiving.

Waxahachie (13-0) advances to play the winner between Carrollton Smith and Longview next weekend for the Region II-4A championship.

Alumni: Stafford will start after all by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

We forwarded an ESPN report earlier in the week that HP-ex Matthew Stafford wouldn't start against Green Bay today, but there he is in the starting lineup for the Lions. Thankfully, that injured left (non-throwing) shoulder must be in better condition that we thought.

Stafford already showed his grit by returning to last week's game with what looked like a separated shoulder to throw the winning touchdown against Cleveland. He can't be over that injury yet, so that's quite a move for him to take command of the team like that today despite the injury.

And it's a great way to earn the respect of your teammates despite being a rookie.

Alumni: Stafford out for Thanksgiving by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Detroit hosts one of the annual Thanksgiving Day games, but HP-ex Matthew Stafford won't be playing this week in the nationally-televised game.

ESPN reported tonight that Stafford separated his left (non-throwing) shoulder against Cleveland yesterday, and is expected to miss Thursday's home game against Green Bay. His expected return was not mentioned. Detroit's next game is Dec. 6 against Cincinnati.

Alumni: Former HP greats enshrined by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I'll give credit to Rick Gosselin of The Dallas Morning News writing in his Sunday column for making me aware of this.

The Detroit Lions dedicated their first "Pride of the Lions" class at halftime of yesterday's game against Cleveland. The "Pride" serves as the club's hall of honor, similar to the Cowboys' Ring of Honor.

Among the 12 Lions inducted in the inaugural class were former HP greats Bobby Layne and Doak Walker. Along with Matthew Stafford's historic final-second rally, it kind of made for an "HP Day" in Detroit yesterday.

Based on media reports, no one in Detroit has yet to put together that Layne, Walker and Stafford all went to the same high school.

Stafford makes history in Detroit by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Ex-HP quarterback Matthew Stafford became the first rookie to throw five touchdown passes in NFL history on Sunday as Detroit beat Cleveland in dramatic fashion at Ford Field.

Stafford thew his fifth touchdown pass was a tight one-yarder to Brandon Pettigrew on the final play of regulation, and Jason Hanson's extra point with no time on the clock gave Detroit a 38-37 win. The Lions were given the untimed play because of a pass interference call against Cleveland in the end zone when Stafford heaved a desperation attempt.

Stafford was hit after his throw to the end zone and appeared to hurt his left shoulder or chest area. He was replaced by Daunte Culpepper. But the defensive penalty, plus a Browns timeout, gave Stafford a chance to get back in the game. Stafford connected with fellow rookie Pettigrew to snap Detroit's six-game losing streak.

Stafford's injury was not determined by Sunday night. Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said X-rays showed Stafford's collarbone wasn't broken, but added more tests are needed.

The Lions (2-8) started the winning drive with 1:46 remaining and no timeouts. Stafford, the No. 1 pick in the draft, did just enough to rally them for the win.
