The Scots, predictably, also garnered the top-ranked position in two other prominent website's final state polls. Here are the top 10 teams in the various rankings, including HP's Division II team being ranked in the LAXpower.com poll.

Kershaw: LA wastes another quality start by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
The Dodgers committed as many errors (a season-high three) as they had hits, struggling again on defense and ruining another strong start by HP-ex Clayton Kershaw. LA lost 3-0 at the Chicago Cubs despite Kershaw not giving up an earned run (and one total) in his six innings of work.

It was a frustrating night for Kershaw, who dropped to 4-3 on the season following his first career appearance at Wrigley Field. Nevertheless, Kershaw showed plenty of class in backing LA shortstop Rafael Furcal, whose two errors led to two unearned runs.

"Fukey has made so many great plays behind me, I have all the confidence in the world in him," Kershaw said. "That's when a pitcher has to pick up your teammate, and tonight, I didn't do it, and that's all there is to it.
"I just got outpitched, that's the simplest way to put it," he said.

Kershaw is tied for fifth in the National League in strikeouts with 72.

Kershaw video link by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

One other note on Clayton Kershaw:

Video links to major league baseball highlights are numerous and plentiful. But just a thought on how lucky Kershaw is to be playing with the Dodgers. Watching the left-hander throw goes to another dimension listening to legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully describe the action with his Hall of Fame voice.

Here's a link to a highlight package from Kershaw's most recent win against San Diego, and of course, more Scully:

Kershaw keeps streak going by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP-ex Clayton Kershaw threw another great game last night, allowing one run and scattering seven hits over 7 1/3 innings in LA's 4-1 win over San Diego. The win, behind seven Kershaw strikeouts, moves the Dodgers to within one game of the Padres for the NL West lead.

The win kept a pretty nasty string going for the lefty. It was Kershaw's third straight start of going at least seven innings while allowing one run or less and also striking out seven or more.

Since his last loss on May 4, Kershaw is 3-0 with an 0.81 ERA and the Dodgers have won 12 of their last 15 games.

"I'm just getting more outs, that's the easy answer," said Kershaw. "I've been throwing more strikes and making hitters beat me instead of beating myself."

Alumni: Young placed on 60-day DL by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

San Diego has placed pitcher Chris Young on its 60-day disabled list as the ex-HP hurler continues to rehab a sore right (throwing) shoulder. Young threw for the first time in a month two weeks ago for Double-A San Antonio, but failed to get out of an inning, giving up five runs and four walks while getting only two outs in his only rehab start.

At this point, there's no telling when, or if, Young can come back this season as the shoulder continues to be evaluated. Young has no other rehab starts scheduled.

Kershaw continues streak in LA by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Clayton Kershaw continued his roll through the May schedule with another dazzler Sunday, allowing one run with a three-hitter without, according to him, having his best stuff working.

It was another great start for the HP-ex following eight scoreless innings he pitched last Sunday against Colorado. That win started what is now a six-game LA win streak.

"To be honest, my command wasn't that great tonight. I guess you could call it effectively wild," Kershaw said. "I didn't hit a whole lot of spots. I really just had a fastball but made the best of it. I think it's something all pitchers need to do to keep your team in the game. You won't have your best stuff every night, but the good ones find a way to get a win when you don't have your best stuff."

LA manager Joe Torre said Kershaw's outing "wasn't sensational, he was just very businesslike out there" while minimizing the damage to one run in the first inning, when he allowed the first two batters to reach base. Kershaw struck out seven, walked two and made 110 pitches.

"He keeps it together and doesn't unravel," said Torre. "For a kid his age (22), it's remarkable. It's fun watching him grow into his ability."

B-Track/Field: Todd 6th at state by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Philip Todd placed sixth in the 1,600-meter run Friday night in Austin at the UIL Track and Field Championships. The HP senior ran a 4:23.08 time, which was nine seconds off the winning pace. Todd was second in the mile to Tyler Chappell of Cleburne at the Region II-4A Championships two weeks ago, but beat him at state by seven seconds and two places in the standings.

The one team point earned by Todd left HP tied for 55th place in the team standings. Lancaster blew away the field with 72 points. Angleton was second with 38 points.

Todd leaves HP as one of the most decorated distance runners in school history. His final high school race came on the same track where he'll start his college career at The University of Texas next fall.

Sara Sutherland finished her high school career with a bronze medal in the mile run at Friday's UIL Championships in Austin. The HP senior ran a time of 5:05.38, just three seconds behind the state champion and just over a second behind the runner-up.

The six team points Sutherland earned for the third-place finish put HP tied for 29th in the team standings. Houston Westbury won the state title, outlasting perennial power Lancaster 68-56.

Sutherland finished her career as one of the most decorated distance runners in school history. She will be running again at the Mike Myers Track Stadium as part of The University of Texas track team next spring.

Here are the final results from the state meet:

Kershaw earns first win, finally by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Helped by LA's offense and a big lead, Clayton Kershaw finally got  a win as the Dodgers won 9-5 over Arizona. Amazingly, the ex-HP hurler had not been credited with a win since July 18 in a season where the Dodgers won the National League West pennant and played in the NL Championship Series.

Despite being 1-0 after one start in 2010, Kershaw wasn't happy with his performance seven strikeouts and giving up only three hits through his 5 1/3 innings of work. He walked five and gave up two runs, both earned.

"I didn't pitch very well, obviously. I'm happy we got the win, but I'd rather they win because of me, not in spite of me," said Kershaw. "I'm not hard on myself, I just call it like I see it. I beat myself today, that's all there is to it."
