Football: Weather cancels 7-on-7 tonight by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Lightning in the area, along with flash storms, has canceled tonight's 7-on-7 league games at Jesuit. The games will not be made up, meaning the Scots' summer 7-on-7 schedule is over.

The football team's summer workouts continue with the Performance Course at Highlander Stadium. The first day of official team workouts is just six weeks away on Aug. 9.

Baseball: Six Scots make All-10-4A by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Six HP baseball players made the first team of the All-District 10-4A team as voted on by the district's eight coaches. Third baseman Ryan Gros, a senior who also earned All-State second-team honors by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association, joined the rest of the Scots' starting infield on the first team along with junior first baseman Ben McElroy, junior second baseman Ford Stainback and senior shortstop JB Gadd. Junior outfielder Jake Howeth and senior pitcher Andrew Scudder were also first-team selections.

Gadd and Gros were unanimous selections. Junior pitcher Preston Edwards was elected to the second team. HP finished 25-10-1 in Fred Oliver's first season with the Scots, who lost to eventual state semifinalist Frisco Wakeland, 2-1, in the bi-district playoffs.

The 10-4A superlatives went to:
Co-Most Valuable Players: Jake Thompson, P/1B, Rockwall-Heath; Brandon Mims, SS, Carr. Smith

Lone Star Cup: HP finishes 5th by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP slipped to fifth in the final Lone Star Cup standings, as two teams passed the Scots with top finishes in the state baseball and softball playoffs earlier this month. The UIL's Lone Star Cup honors the state's top athletic and academic schools each year.

The Scots earned 84 points through scoring from athletics, band, fine arts and academic competitions. Friendswood won its second consecutive Lone Star Cup with 100 points, edging Austin Lake Travis (94 points). The two teams were tied for first heading into the state baseball and softball regional playoffs. Berths into the state baseball playoffs by third-place Brenham (92) and Frisco Wakeland (86) accounted for those programs' late surges past HP in the final standings. Frisco Wakeland beat HP in the first round of the baseball playoffs.

Only UIL-sponsored sports are eligible for the Lone Star Cup. Here are the final Lone Star Cup standings as released by the UIL through June 18, although scoring appeals can be heard through the end of the month.

Football: Scots roll on in 7-on-7 by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

The scene at Jesuit Prep School on Monday afternoon looked just like a regular HP football practice, minus the helmets, and the pads, and the field turf, and a handful of coaches working inside the huddles.

Instead of 90 or so players crammed onto one field, four teams of seven players fit well onto two 45-yard fields for another round of 7-on-7 work. HP had the bulk of its skill-position players on hand for the third week in the four-week June schedule.

HP beat Bishop Lynch, lost to W.T. White on the final play, and tied Jesuit in this week's set of three 25-minute mini-games. Each team plays the three others each week. No results or standings have been kept.

"We asking them to be up at the weight room two hours a day, four days a week, and then they're out there doing 7-on-7 on Mondays, so there's plenty of football going on right now," HP head coach Randy Allen said.

The Scots will close their 7-on-7 league next Monday, June 28, back at Jesuit. The mini-games begin at 6 p.m. Allen said HP has not played in any other 7-on-7 state-qualifying tournaments this summer.

Football: A mixup on 7-on-7 tourney by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I found HP head football coach Randy Allen at Monday's 7-on-7 games, and he said the Scots were never officially invited to the Red Bull Game Breakers 7-on-7 tournament two weeks ago.

I reported earlier this month that HP was a no-show at the event. My apologies for the misleading wording. Allen said he informed tourney organizers earlier this month that most of the players would be out of town and unavailable for the June 11 event, and thought that concluded HP's involvement.

Allen was unaware the Game Breakers staff still had HP listed among the teams expected to attend the event at Cedar Hill High School on the Red Bull website, and the Scots were slotted into the 16-team bracket up until to the day of the event.

HP's declined invitation left the  Game Breakers with a 12-team bracket after three other invited teams didn't show up either.

The Scots have been competing in a 7-on-7 league with W.T. White, Bishop Lynch and Jesuit each Monday night in June. The final games are next Monday, June 28, beginning at 6 p.m. at the grass fields on the south end of Jesuit's campus.

Football: Title games at Cowboys Stadium by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Dallas, uh, make that Arlington, will host the UIL state championship football games in December, as the UIL made it official today that the Class 5A-3A title games will be played at Cowboys Stadium. The 2010 season marks the first time all conference championship football games will be played at a pre-determined location. The Class 2A and 1A games will be played down the road in Mansfield, and the six-man title games will be in Abilene.

The UIL's goal is to rotate the sites of its state championships games among Texas' three premier facilities - Cowboys Stadium, Reliant Stadium in Houston, and the Alamodome in San Antonio. Reliant and the Alamodome have hosted the Class 5A title games since the UIL went to a single-site for 5A in 2006. The UIL tried to have the 5A games at Cowboys Stadium last year, but a college basketball game between Texas and North Carolina was already scheduled.

For HP's purposes, the Class 4A Division II game is at 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17. The 4A Division I game is at Noon on Saturday, Dec. 18. HP is likely to be in the Division II bracket as the sixth-largest school in District 10-4A in terms of enrollment.

"We're excited about hosting great high school football games at some of the premiere venues in the state," said UIL director of athletics Cliff Odenwald said in a news release. "We look forward to working closely with all the venues in creating a first-class championship experience for the schools, fans and students involved in the games. We are so grateful to be able to create an incredible experience for our student-athletes."

If any area teams advance to the title games, the state record for one-game attendance could be threatened. The 1977 Class 4A title game between Plano and Port Neches-Groves owns the record when 49,953 filed into Texas Stadium.

Here is the UIL's posted schedule for the championship games:

(at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington)
Fri., Dec. 10, 2010
Class 3A Division I - 7:30 p.m.

Fri., Dec. 17, 2010
Class 3A Division II - 4 p.m.
Class 4A Division II - 8 p.m.

Sat., Dec. 18, 2010
Class 4A Division I - 12 p.m.
Class 5A Division II - 4 p.m.
Class 5A Division I - 8 p.m.

(at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene)
Sat. Dec. 11, 2010
Class 1A 6-Man Division II - 2 p.m.
Class 1A 6-Man Division I - 7 p.m.

(at Vernon Newsom Stadium in Mansfield)
Fri., Dec. 17, 2010
Class 1A Division II - 7:30 p.m.

Sat., Dec. 18, 2010
Class 1A Division I - 12 p.m.

Football: Texas Football lists HP 1st by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Preseason football officially began today as Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine hit the newsstands across the state. The unofficial Bible of high school and college football has HP ranked No. 9 in the state, and the district coaches picked the Scots to repeat as District 10-4A champions again this fall.

We respect the staff at DCTF enough to not steal too much of their thunder here. Any self-respecting high school football fan is going to buy the magazine anyway. But let's just tell you that the coaches didn't pick any HP players as the offensive or defensive MVP, and no HP players were preseason all-state picks. The Scots return four starters from last year's 11-2 squad. If the coaches' predictions hold to be correct, HP would face Frisco Wakeland in the first round of the Division II playoffs.

As for the DCTF Class 4A state rankings, DCTF listed defending Division I champion Austin Lake Travis at No. 1, followed by Aledo, Brenham, Stephenville, Angleton, Denton Ryan, Kerrville Tivy, Tyler John Tyler, and Smithson Valley at No. 10.

Preseason drills begin Aug. 9, and the season opener against Everman, ranked No. 12 in the state by DCTF, is Aug. 28 at SMU.

Football: HP a no-show at 7-on-7 event by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

Publisher's Note: A follow-up to this blog item was published on June 21. Click here to read the explanation for HP not appearing at this tournament. The original post is below. - Scott Farrell

CEDAR HILL - HP didn't show up at the 7-on-7 tournament out at Cedar Hill. Three other teams also decided not to make the trip, turning what was supposed to be a 16-team bracket into a 12-team event. The Red Bull Game Breakers staff were not informed of the teams' plans prior to the start of the tournament.

HP's next 7-on-7 competition is in its June summer league, which has moved to Jesuit on Monday nights due to construction at Highlander Stadium. The Scots begin play at 6 p.m. Monday, June 14, at Jesuit.
