Kershaw: Odd-on favorite to be LA's No. 1 by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I found this on some Associated Press wire reports during a web search Thursday. Looks like HP-ex Clayton Kershaw is the early favorite to become the Dodgers' opening day starter.

(from the AP)
GLENDALE, Ariz. - While the Dodgers still aren't confirming their opening day starting pitcher, Clayton Kershaw appears to be in line for the assignment.

A day after manager Joe Torre said the team's regular-season rotation plans would become obvious, the soon-to-be 22-year-old Kershaw was being pointed toward the April 5 season opener at Pittsburgh.

Torre did announce his spring rotation plans Thursday, saying Vicente Padilla will start the spring opener March 5 against the Chicago White Sox. Left-hander Eric Stults, one of a bevy of candidates for the No. 5 spot in the rotation, will pitch in the second spring game.

The clue to the regular-season rotation takes shape after that. Kershaw will pitch the third spring game, ahead of fellow opening day starting candidates Chad Billingsley and Hiroki Kuroda.

Despite being so young, Kershaw is the candidate that has done the most to earn the honor. He had the fifth-best ERA in the National League last season at 2.79 in 30 starts and 171 innings. His 1.83 ERA at home led the major leagues.

With two days remaining in the 2009 regular season and the slumping Dodgers losing their grip on a potential National League West title, Kershaw pitched six scoreless innings in a victory that made the team division champs.

"To be put in that situation and be able to come through was an awesome feeling," said Kershaw, who has a modest 13-13 career record. "But at the same time, it was just one game too. Hopefully I'll have a lot more of those throughout my career."

Billingsley had been the team's No. 1 starter in waiting, but he stumbled to a 3-7 record and a 5.20 ERA in the second half last season after being named an NL All-Star. He blamed mechanical issues for his struggles.

Kuroda started the season opener last season at San Diego, but three separate injuries in 2009 cost him at least 11 starts. Padilla pitched well down the stretch last season and into the playoffs, but he only joined the organization last Aug. 19.

UIL: Sherman/Denison appeal denied by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

As predicted here following the UIL realignment released earlier this month, Sherman and Denison appealed the UIL regarding their placement in District 13-4A along with Texarkana Texas, Sulphur Springs and Mount Pleasant. They wanted to be in District 10-4A with HP, Richardson Pearce, two McKinney schools and two Wylie schools.

The Sherman/Denison appeal would then send Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath, who were realigned in 10-4A, into 13-4A and make them make the long trips up I-30 just like new 13-4A members Greenville and Royse City will. The appeal makes sense geographically.

Their appeal was denied on Thursday, according to a news released from the UIL.

B-Basketball: Our all-district team by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

This comes from Michael Gardner, who has been covering the HP boys' basketball team for our site most of the district season. It's his first-team all-district team for District 10-4A, based on statistics and what he's seen from each of them during the district season.

It's hard to argue against any of these picks. Listed below are Gardner's picks for the top five players in the district. The 10-4A coaches will release their team once all of the district's teams have been eliminated from the playoffs.

First Team All-District:
PG: Pierre Hayden - Royse City (19.8 pts./game)
SG: Randell Joyner - Carrollton Smith (11.2 pts./game, 5.4 rebs./game, 3.2 ast./game)
SF: Al Lasker - Carrollton Smith (14.8 pts./game, 8.9 rebs./game)
PF: Kenny Slocum - Richardson Pearce (17.4 pts./game, 7.5 rebs./game)
C: Daniel Edwards - HP (15.8 pts./game, 9 rebs./game)

Co-MVPS: Randell Joyner - Carrollton Smith; and Daniel Edwards, HP

B-Basketball: Playoff opener vs. Sherman by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP dropped into fourth place in the final District 10-4A standings, and will face 9-4A champion Sherman in the bi-district playoffs next week. The playoff arrangements will be finalized later this week, but expect a Tuesday game at 7:30 p.m. If the schools choose a halfway point as a neutral site, McKinney, McKinney North or Allen would be logical.
Sherman, which eliminated HP 54-31 in the third round of the playoffs last year, was 12-2 in 9-4A. The Bearcats feature one of the country's top players in Cameron Clark, who is #28 on the ESPN Rise national recruiting list. Clark has committed to play at Oklahoma next season.

Greenville football coach resigns by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

I found this story from the Greenville Herald-Banner today saying that Greenville High School football coach and athletic director Jim Phillips is leaving to assume the same positions at Pasadena Dobie High School outside Houston.

Phillips was 8-12 in two seasons at Greenville, but took a woeful 2-8 team in 2008 and molded them into a 6-4 playoff contender in one year.

Greenville won't be in HP's district the next two years, but they are a potential playoff opponent. They expect to have a new coach in place for school board approval at their March 23 meeting.

G-Basketball: Playoff date set by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP (17-12) takes on Frisco Wakeland (25-6) in the bi-district playoffs at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16, at Garland's Naaman Forest High School. The Lady Scots enter the playoffs coming off a thrilling 52-50 win in overtime at Rockwall-Heath last week.

HP will be the home team.

Baseball: Scrimmage schedule change by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Is it a bad omen when the first baseball event of the season is canceled due to rain?
Maybe, maybe not. But today's varsity baseball scrimmage against Flower Mound has been moved to tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Scotland Yard. It is the first of three scrimmages for the Scots this week. HP will be at Tillery Field in Mesquite for a pair of scrimmages against W.T. White and Mesquite beginning at noon.
The junior varsity scrimmage originally set for today at Flower Mound has been moved to Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard.

Football: Five Scots are Academic All-State by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP kept its academic prowess intact within its football program, as the Texas High School Coaches Association named five Scots to its Academic All-State team.

Andrew Bowman, a senior, led the list on the THSCA's Elite Team, along with fellow seniors Noah Flabiano, Joey Landess and Matt Skidmore on the second team. James Mills, a junior, was also named to the second team.

HP was one of only 21 schools across the state to have at least five players named to either the Elite, First or Second teams. The entire list for Class 4A can be found here.

G-Basketball: An early playoff look by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
HP and Greenville are currently tied at 8-5 in District 10-4A with one game left in the regular season. Both will be underdogs in their final games, with HP visiting second-place Rockwall-Heath and Greenville traveling to Rockwall.

If they are still tied, the pair could elect to play a one-game playoff for the third-place playoff seed. But there's little difference in the early playoff road for either spot in the Region II-4A bracket, which negates the impact of earning the higher seed.

In the first round, either team will face a Frisco school ranked in the state's top 10, and even if they pull an upset there, will likely face the two top Dallas ISD teams in Lincoln (ranked No. 13 in the state) or Hillcrest. If there is a difference in the playoff paths, it's perhaps in that Hillcrest, likely to be the 12-4A runner-up, is a lesser opponent than Lincoln.

Which leads to one random thought for HP: rather than a playoff or coin flip for third, perhaps the Lady Scots should accept the fourth seed and get a rematch against Frisco, which won last year's bi-district playoff 106-42. There's a huge pay-back opportunity for HP there, and if they did pull of the upset, Hillcrest would await them.

Here is how the regional sub-bracket would look like in the first two rounds if the season ended today:
10-4A third vs. Frisco Wakeland (25-5 and ranked No. 6 in the state this week)
A. M. Smith vs. Lincoln (15-3 and ranked  No. 13 in the state this week)

10-4A fourth vs.  Frisco (27-5 and ranked No. 8 in the state this week)
Seagoville (11-16) vs. Hillcrest (24-4)

B-Basketball: State rankings update by Scott Farrell Comment (0)
Looking a few weeks ahead as the HP boys basketball team approaches the playoffs (they haven't clinched yet, but they will), HP it will be another tough sled through the Region II bracket. HP is in third place, and could catch Richardson Pearce for second in the final four games and force a one-game playoff.

But looking at the state rankings, it may not matter which team is second and which is third. No. 4 Lincoln is pulling away in the lead in District 12-4A,  and No.  12 Kimball is sure to be the champion in District 11-4A. Those would be the two potential second-round opponents for the second- and third-place teams in 10-4A. And that's if they get by the 9-4A teams in bi-district, which is far from a given.

Here are the state rankings for this week, with the records published by the TABC.
