Spring football practice opens by Scott Farrell Comment (0)

There's no better way to open a week during a Texas spring than with football practice.

Or so the football diehards say in this state. Count me as one of them.

HP opens its spring football drills today at 3:30 p.m. at Highlander Stadium, and will continue through May 19 with its annual Blue-Gold intra-squad scrimmage. The Scots come off an 11-2 season in which they reached the regional semifinals in Division I.

It's hard to say how many starters the Scots return, because some of last year's starters may be switching positions for this fall. But the strength of the team appears to be along the offensive line and at quarterback. Up front HP returns center Matt Gibson, guard Preston Lynn, and tackles Zach Foster and Matt Harrison. Upcoming senior quarterback Luke Woodley has a year of starting under his belt and is already among the state's top recruits at the position.

The Scots will conduct scrimmages each Thursday at 3:30 p.m. that are open to the public.
