Football: HP-Hillcrest game notes
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 20 November 2010 01:52
The yellow ribbons are on the trees, and Thanksgiving week is upon us. That means two things - plenty of turkey, and Scots football on the weekend.

HP's 49-14 win Friday advanced it three rounds deep in the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season and the 28th time in the program's history. The Scots are now 15-1 all-time in area-round playoff games and have won 15 in a row in the UIL-designated 'area round' that started in 1982. In second-round playoff games during their playoff history, the Scots improved to 28-9.

The win will give HP the chance to play in Arlington's two-year-old Cowboys Stadium for the first time facing the winner between Whitehouse and Mesquite Poteet. HP is 12-14-1 all-time in third-round playoff games and has lost in this round the past two seasons.

Other notes from Friday's wins:
Is there something magical about seven touchdowns? HP has scored 49 points in four of its last five games, all wins over McKinney North (49-0), Rockwall-Heath (49-21), McKinney (49-24), Frisco Centennial (49-7) and Hillcrest (49-14).

Streaking Scots
* The Scots' current 12-game win streak ties for the sixth-longest in the program's history along with six other teams. One more win will tie the 2003 team with 13 straight. HP won 26 consecutive games spanning the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

* HP's 12 straight wins also ties for ninth on the all-time unbeaten streaks.

* The Scots are 12-0 for only the ninth time in school history , matching teams from 2007, 2005, 2002, 1993, 1983, 1980, 1977, 1976 and 1943. The 1945 state champion team was 11-0-1 after 12 games.

* The Scots extended their Highlander Stadium win streak to 63 straight with the win. HP has not lost at home since the 1998 season.

* HP's 49 points tied four other teams for the 10th-highest total in a playoff game in the school's history, and matched last week's point total against Frisco Centennial. Five of the 14 highest-scoring games have come within the last three seasons. The list:

MOST POINTS SCORED IN A PLAYOFF GAME
Pts. vs. Opponent, Year, Result
71 vs. Samuell, 2001, W 71-20
69 vs. McKinney, 2008, W 69-37
62 vs. Greenville, 2001, W 62-41
62 vs. Hillcrest, 1993, W 62-21
59 vs. Marshall, 2005, W 59-0
59 vs. McKinney North, 2005, W 59-17
56 vs. South Oak Cliff, 2009, W 56-20
56 vs. McKinney, 2009, W 56-38
51 vs. Sulphur Springs, 2002, W 51-14
49 vs. Hillcrest, 2010, W 49-14
49 vs. Frisco Centennial, 2010, W 49-7
49 - three other times

* HP's 477 points scored this season now ranks ninth on the all-time list for points in a season. Next up on the list is the 517 points scored by the 2003 Scots, and the 534 points scored by the 2002 Scots. Each mark above this team on the list has come since 2000.

* HP's 98 total points in its two playoff games is already the 11th-highest total in the school's playoff history. The 2007 team that reached the state title game scored 248 points to set the school record for one season's playoffs. The Scots' next score will move them into at least 10th place, matching the 1977 team's 100 points.

Football: Scots have turkey early, 49-14
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 20 November 2010 00:40
It was a predictable outcome and a game where the only mystery left in the second half was how bad the final outcome would be.

HP rolled to a 49-14 win over Hillcrest in the area playoffs Friday, and rolled up even bigger offensive numbers. The Scots (12-0) went away from the rushing game that had served them well the past three weeks and took the air instead.

The Scots' 646 total yards likely break the school's record for a playoff game, and HP's 503 passing yards should also rank at the top of the record book. If there was one. There are no official records, but the passing mark does surpass the 479 yards HP threw for against McKinney in the 2009 playoffs, is the highest total of the past seven seasons and certainly more seasons behind it.

Jake Howeth and Brady Burgin combined tocomplete 23-of-35 passes, four for touchdowns. The 21.87-yards-per-completion is one of the highest totals in the Scots' playoff history.

HP scored touchdowns on its first five possessions and missed a 30-yard field goal on its last drive. That is almost all you need to know about this drubbing that sends the Scots into the third round of the playoffs for a fourth consecutive season and a 28th time in the program's history.

The Scots are 12-0 for only the 9th time in school history, and will meet the winner between Whitehouse and Mesquite Poteet winner at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. It will be HP's first game in the two-year-old football palace in Arlington.

The players will certainly look forward to that game next week, but protecting the home turf was of more concern Friday. HP won a 63rd consecutive game at Highlander Stadium behind Howeth, who tallied 273 total yards, 219 of it passing and 40 on the ground. He also caught one of Burgin's passes for 14 yards. The senior quarterback had a part in HP's first three touchdowns, two of them on short runs sandwiching a perfectly-thrown fade pass to Dalton Stogner near the end of the first quarter.

Burgin entered in the second quarter and diced up Hillcrest's secondary some more, connecting on six of his first eight passes for 117 yards. The last completion during that string was another toss to Stogner in the end zone, which he hauled in for a 15-yard score.

Preston Miller ran in from a yard out just before halftime for a 35-0 lead on a drive highlighted by a 62-yard catch-and-run by Colin Stringer down to the Hillcrest one. Miller scored on the next play.

The Scots' defense continued its thieving ways, coming up with three interceptions. Blake Poston picked off a pass just before halftime to start the drive that turned into Miller's touchdown. He stole another pass on Hillcrest's (8-3) next possession, and his 20-yard return gave HP one last scoring chance, but the field goal missed wide left.

Howeth connected with William Morris for touchdown passes on consecutive drives to start the second half and built the game into a rout. Morris led Highland Park with 193 receiving yards on eight catches, the best of which was a deep post that he turned into a 52-yard scoring play. Stringer had 115 receiving yards.

HP held Hillcrest scoreless until the final 10 minutes, and the Scots' defense didn't yield a point to the Panthers' offense. Hillcrest scored twice in the fourth quarter with its special teams. Wilson Look got through the HP line to block Jake Howeth's punt, and Eddie Day recovered the loose ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Tony White picked up a punt that HP was about to down and turned it into a 95-yard touchdown return.

Aledo, Denton Ryan, HP, Cedar Park and Frisco Liberty are the only undefeated teams remaining in either Class 4A bracket.

Football: HP-Centennial notes/records
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:30
HP came through with a sixth consecutive bi-district playoff win, and also earned the fourth-largest winning margin in the program's history with Friday's 49-7 win. The Scots are 11-0 for the 12th time in their history, and are now one win away from tying for the sixth-longest win streak in the program's history. More details on each of those notes are below in ScotSports.com's weekly game notes package.

This was HP's sixth consecutive win in the bi-district playoffs, and the Scots now have a 35-14-4 all-time record in the bi-district/first round of the playoffs. The current win streak came against these foes:
2005 - HP 38, Texarkana Texas 31 at Tyler's Rose Stadium
2006 - HP 35, McKinney North 31 at Murphy's Kimbrough Stadium
2007 - HP 49, Frisco 28 at Highlander Stadium
2008 - HP 69, McKinney 37 at Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium
2009 - HP 56, McKinney 38 at Murphy’s Kimbrough Stadium
2010 - HP 49, Frisco Centennial 7 at Carrollton's Standridge Stadium

* The 42-point win tied for the fourth-largest in the program's playoff history, equaling the margin HP had against McKinney North (a 59-17 win) in the 2005 playoffs. The Scots' 59-0 win over Marshall is the largest win in the school's playoff history.

* HP's 11-game win streak is tied for the 12th-longest in school history, equaling similar streaks in 1958, 1956, and spanning the 1936-37 seasons. A win next week would move the 2010 Scots into a tie for sixth all-time with a 12-game streak.

* HP is 11-0 for the 12th time in its history, and for the first time since 2007 when it advanced to the Division II state title game. The Scots also made it 11-0 in the 2006 and 2005 (state title) seasons, which makes this the fourth time in the past six seaons that HP has won its first 11 games in a season. Other 11-0 seasons came in 2002, 1993, 1983, 1980, 1977, 1976, 1956 and 1943. HP had a 10-0-1 record in the 1945 playoffs.

* Looking at HP's history, next week's game favors HP considerably. HP is 27-9 all-time in second-round games, 14-1 all-time in the area round (1982-current) games, has a 13-1 all-time record against Hillcrest, and is 2-0 against the Panthers in the playoffs.

* The Scots have scored 428 points this season. They are five points shy of the top-12 scoring marks in a season, 10 points shy of 11th and 40 points shy of the top 10.

* This was HP's first-ever meeting with Frisco Centennial. The Scots are a combined 6-0 against schools from the Frisco ISD now, with two of the wins coming in playoff games. HP beat Frisco 49-28 in the 2007 bi-district playoffs, and swept two-game non-district series with Frisco (2006-07) and Frisco Liberty (2008-09).

* Brady Burgin will forever hold at least a part of one passing record at HP. His 12-for-12 performance and 100-percent completion rate is the highest in an HP playoff game since Winston Gamso completed 10-of-13 (76.9 percent) against West Mesquite in the 2007 playoffs. Burgin broke his own mark of 87.5 percent against McKinney North three weeks ago.  Jake Howeth also hit 87.5 percent of his passes earlier this season against Monterrey Tech.

* The Scots' 90.48-percent pass completion percentage is also the highest mark of the past seven seasons, and beats the previous mark for a playoff game by 15 percentage points (75 percent against South Oak Cliff in 2009).

* The 342 combined passing yards by Jake Howeth and Brady Burgin ranks as the seventh-highest total in a playoff game of the past seven seasons. HP's 479-yard total against McKinney in the bi-district playoffs is the highest during that time. The Scots' quarterbacks and receivers averaged 18 yards per catch, which is also the highest mark since the McKinney playoff game last year.

* The interception returns by Thomas Perry and Reid Oden are the fourth and fifth touchdowns scored by the Scots' defense this season. HP returned two interceptions for touchdowns last season. It has scored on defense in only three of the past six seasons.

* William Morris' four receptions for 86 yards (a 21.5-yard average) is only the second time in the past two seasons that an HP receiver has averaged more than 20 yards per catch, a span of four playoff games.

* Jake Howeth's 141 rushing yards against Centennial marked the fourth consecutive game the senior's rushed for more than 100 yards, and gives his six career games over 100. The 141 total is the most for an HP player in a playoff game since Michael Thatcher rushed for 142 yards against Kilgore in 2007, and is the second-highest total of the past seven seasons. Howeth's 7.42-yards-per-carry average is the fifth-highest average in a playoff game of the past seven seasons.

* HP's 38 rushing attempts are the third-highest total in a playoff game of the past seven seasons. The Scots rushed 51 times against Everman in 2007 and 46 times in the state title game against Marshall in 2005.

* HP went over the 500-total-yard mark for the second time this season with 513 yards. It also averaged 8.69 yards per play, a season high. The Scots gained 615 yards at Sherman earlier this season. HP just missed a third 500-yard game with 499 at McKinney North three weeks ago.

* The Scots' 28  first downs were just one short of the highest total of the past seven seasons, and ties the mark they had against Stephenville in the 2005 state semifinals. HP had 29 first downs against McKinney in the last season's playoffs.

Football: HP picks off Centennial, 49-7

CARROLLTON - HP's defense came up with five takeaways, returning two interceptions for touchdowns, and the Scots' offense was near-perfect in the passing game in a 49-7 runaway bi-district playoff win over Frisco Centennial at Standridge Stadium.

The Scots (11-0) advance to the area (second) round to face Hillcrest (8-2), a last-minute 15-14 winner over Seagoville, at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Highlander Stadium.

HP scored on three of its first four possessions, plus one of Centennial's, for a 28-7 halftime lead and the Titans (6-5) never threatened. The win was HP's sixth consecutive first-round playoff victory.

Junior defense end Thomas Perry sparked the first-half scoring with a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown. HP had just taken a 14-7 lead on
Dalton Stogner's 65-yard catch-and-run down the right sideline when Perry stole a pass on Centennial's second play.

The pick, one of five HP takeaways in the game, put the Scots ahead 21-7 following Nick Rose's point-after kick with 29 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Scots' defense is peaking at the right time. The Scots have come up with at least four takeaways in consecutive games and are now an impressive plus-21 on the season in turnover margin.

Senior linebacker Reid Oden had a career night. recovering a fumble at the HP 3-yard-line to kill Centennial's second drive, and also returning his second interception of the game 25 yards for a fourth-quarter touchdown.

Senior defensive back and co-captain Blake Poston picked off his eighth pass of the season on the next drive, snagging Centennial quarterback Nick Foster's bomb at the HP 22. Poston has had at least one interception in the last four games.

That pick led to Jake Howeth's two-yard touchdown run to finish off a 9-play, 78-yard drive and a 28-7 lead. Junior quarterback Brady Burgin connected on 14- and 19-yard passes, and Howeth scampered for 17 yards on a key third-down play to extend the scoring drive that made Centennial's first game against HP one to forget.

"We kept them out of the end zone, which is not easy," Scots head coach Randy Allen said. "Our defense scored and set up scores. I think we're getting better."

Centennial moved inside the HP 20-yard-line four times, but came away with only seven points (on its opening drive). The Scots thrwarted one of
the drives with Oden's fumble recovery and the other two with fourth-down stops.

Offensively, HP posted some hefty numbers through the air just one week after rushing for 265 yards against McKinney last week. Combined, the HP quarterbacks were 19-of-21 for 341 yards. Burgin was a perfect 12-of-12 for 171 yards, and Howeth was an efficient 7-of-9 for 161 yards and tossed both Scots touchdowns. Howeth also rushed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, both on short runs, to finish off the sixth 100-yard rushing effort of his career.

Centennial scored on its first possession coming off a big 56-yard pass play from Foster to Austin Schotts. Jamel Bullock ran 20 yards for the touchdown with 9:26 left in the first quarter.

HP responded after a good kickoff return started its first drive at its own 39. Howeth ran four times for 31 yards, and he an 11-yard pass to William Morris, and another to Ben McElroy that was good for an 18-yard touchdown to tie the score.

The Titans drove again to inside the Scots' 5 before Oden's fumble recovery.
