Football: Class 4A playoff update 12/11
Written by Scott Farrell    Friday, 10 December 2010 23:16
Aledo scored a two-point conversion with under five minutes remaining, then stopped Mesquite Poteet's two-point attempt with two minutes left to preserve a 29-27 win in the Divison II semifinals. Meanwhile, La Marque routed Corpus Christi Calallen 42-18. Those results Friday set up the first state championship pairing at 8 p.m. next Friday, Dec. 17, at Cowboys Stadium. Aledo is the defending Division II champion, and La Marque is a five-time state champion from the past playing in its 10th title game but first since 2006. In the other title game, Denton Ryan will take on three-time defending champion Lake Travis in the Division I final on Saturday. Ryan edged Wylie, 25-20, and Lake Travis wiped out Friendswood 24-3.

Here are the UIL Championships for Class 4A next weekend.

Football: Class 4A playoff update 11/30
Written by Scott Farrell    Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:16
The state's Elite Eight is set, and HP won't be a part of it following its upset loss to Mesquite Poteet on Saturday. In Division I, two regional finals come down to rematches between district mates as Denton Ryan and Wichita Falls Rider play for the Region I title, and Lake Travis faces Cedar Park in Region IV. Denton Ryan and Cedar Park won the first meetings. In Division II, Aledo and Stephenville highlight the four regional finals, while upstarts Poteet and Bastrop play a very interesting game next week in Waco. La Marque and Corpus Christi Calallen have been this deep many times before.
The state rankings had it mostly correct. Five of the 10 teams ranked in the final Associated Press poll - No. 1 Aledo, No. 2 Denton Ryan, No. 4 Cedar Park, No. 8 Tyler J. Tyler and No. 9 Lake Travis - are still alive in either bracket. At least one of them will lose this week when Cedar Park plays Lake Travis.
The regional final pairings are below, and further below are the complete results from each division to date.

Football: HP-Poteet game notes
Written by Scott Farrell    Sunday, 28 November 2010 00:55
ARLINGTON -- HP's first game in Cowboys Stadium didn't turn out the way it wanted with another loss in the third round of the playoffs. The Scots have now lost in the third round three consecutive seasons and are now 12-15-1 all-time in third-round playoff games, but 11-9 all-time in games serving as regional semifinals.

The Scots' five turnovers against Poteet were a rare anomaly indeed. They were not only a season high, but they equaled the Scots' total turnover count from the previous eight games. HP had held on to the ball successfully all season, never posting more than two turnovers in any game and came into the Poteet came without a turnover in two postseason games.

How rare was a five-turnover game? HP committed five or more turnovers in only two other games in the past seven seasons.

This was the 15th game in the HP-Mesquite Poteet series, and the first to come in the playoffs. HP is now 14-1 all-time against Poteet. Until Saturday, HP had not lost a game to a Mesquite ISD school since becoming a Class 4A school in 1988.

Other game notes from the HP-Poteet game:
* HP's 119 points scored during the 2010 playoffs is the eighth-highest total in school history.

* The Scots' 12-game win streak this season tied the sixth-longest streak in school history, and ties for the ninth-longest unbeaten streak (includes ties). HP's 17-game win streak and unbeaten streak in regular-season games will resume in 2011.

* HP's 498 points this season ties for the ninth-highest total in one season in school history.

* The Scots' defense came up with a fumble recovery to continue its streak of gaining at least one takeaway in every game this season.

* Poteet's 45 points tied the second-highest total ever given up by HP in a playoff game, and ties the sixth-highest total given up in any HP game. Waxahachie's 49 points in the same round last year is the most ever surrendered by HP in a playoff, and 53 scored by Forest Avenue HS in 1928 is the most ever given up.
The third round has been troublesome for HP not just because of its three-game losing streak. Of the seven highest-scoring games by opponents in a playoff game, four of them have come in third-round games. The top seven:

Most Points Scored Against in a Playoff Game
49 - 2009 vs. Waxahachie (3rd round)
45 - 2010 vs. Mesquite Poteet (3rd round)
45 - 2003 vs. Denton Ryan (5th round)
45 - 2001 vs. Ennis (4th round)
41 - 2008 vs. Waco Midway (3rd round)
41 - 2001 vs. Greenville (1st round)
41 - 1986 vs. Longview (3rd round)

* The 45-21 loss ties the fourth-largest losing margin (24 points) in HP's playoff history.

Football: HP's season turns over and out
Written by Scott Farrell    Sunday, 28 November 2010 00:17
ARLINGTON -- HP sailed into new territory Saturday playing at Cowboys Stadium for the first time, but its season crashed on the rocks of five turnovers and costly miscues.

The Scots never led, and could not capture the momentum against Mesquite Poteet in what was easily HP's most disappointing performance of the season in a 45-21 loss in the Class 4A Division II Region II semifinal. HP (12-1) suffered its only loss of the season on its biggest stage, losing in the third round of the playoffs for a third consecutive season.

It was a momentus night, but for the wrong reasons as Poteet scored its first win over HP in the 15-game series. HP came into the game without a turnover in its two previous games but committed five against Poteet, something the Scots had only done in two other games in the past seven seasons.

The Pirates (11-2), who have had a remarkable turnaround by advancing to the regional final for the first time after a 1-9 season last year, scored 17 points off the HP turnovers. Yet each one was costly in its own way.

The Scots got the game's first break while each team played tentatively in the first quarter adjusting to their first games in the new football palace. Late in the quarter HP's Mauricio Garza got into the Poteet backfield and knocked the ball loose, and Thomas Perry recovered at the Poteet 29.

It was Poteet's only turnover, creating a situation HP usually pounces on. But the Scots gave the ball back with a fumble of their own three plays later, negating a first down at the Poteet 10. The Scots' defense finished the season gaining at least one takeaway in all 13 games.

An interception off a tipped pass on HP's next possession led to Poteet's first touchdown, and another tipped interception at the HP 36 midway through the second quarter led to another score and a 17-7 Poteet lead.

The costliest mistake for HP arguably didn't come on a turnover but gave the ball away nonetheless. The Scots had rallied to within 17-14 and had just forced Poteet to punt with 1:04 left in the half after calling defensive timeouts to keep the Pirates from running out the clock. HP's fair catch at its own 44 and its chance to score on a short field was negated when the Scots were called for running into the punter.

Poteet completed a 13-yard pass on the next play to cross midfield, then connected on a 43-yard touchdown strike down the middle for a momentum-grabbing 24-14 lead heading into halftime.

The Pirates received the second-half kickoff and scored again on a 10-play, 80-yard drive, converting two third-down plays along the way. Poteet converted five of its first seven third-downs into first downs, and Courtland Crumby's 8-yard run gave Poteet a 31-14 lead to put HP in real trouble.

HP came back with its own 10-play drive as Brady Burgin heated up with five completions for 65 of the 80 yards on the drive. Burgin found Dalton Stogner for a 5-yard touchdown to cut the lead back to 10 with 6:02 still left in the third quarter.

The Scots' defense held Poteet for a three-and-out, and was on the move again on its next possession before another costly penalty. Burgin completed a 14-yard pass to Ben McElroy on third-and-four with 4:30 left, but the Scots were called for a chop block. Instead of a first down at the Poteet 30, HP faced third-and-19 at its own 41 and had to punt after an incompletion.

Poteet's Steven Hicks broke loose on a 67-yard run on the next play, and Pirates quarterback Beau Nowell ran in for a touchdown that gave Poteet a 38-21 lead with 3:11 left.

HP lost another fumble on its next possession, and Poteet put the game away with another Hicks touchdown run. The Scots had four fumbles in the game, losing two, and threw three interceptions in the game.

Preston Miller led the Scots' ground game with 98 yards and a touchdown on only 10 carries, and Stogner had 104 receiving yards and a touchdown. Burgin finished 13-of-21 for 171 yards but with two interceptions.
