B-Cr. Country: Scots among elite
Written by Scott Farrell    Tuesday, 31 August 2010 22:29
It was the finest of beginnings for the Running Scots on Saturday as HP had one of its finest meets in years at the annual Greenhill Six-Mile Relay that kicks off the cross country season.

HP placed fourth in the Class 5A-4A Division, the highest finish by any 4A school and close behind 5A state favorites Cedar Park and Southlake Carroll. The team of Max Rosenfeld, Ben Clapp, Matt Galvin and Philip Todd combined for a 31:56.10 time on the unique relay race. Cedar Park won in 30:18.82.
The next-closest 4A team was Rockwall, which took seventh overall but was nearly 30 seconds behind HP. Red Oak took 13th and Mesquite Poteet was 15th as the only other 4A schools in the top 20.

"Congratulations to the HP Elite Gold team for an incredible finish in the highly competitive field," Scots coach Randy Adair said. "This is probably the most talented group of young men to compete in cross country at Highland Park in many, many years.

"This group has the potential to be medal winners at the state meet in November. We must continue to train and compete at that intensity, and set our goals high to accomplish the tasks of being on the podium at the state championship meet," he added.

The Scots' other team in the elite division - Travis Hebeler, Connor Hayward, Sam McEntire and Glen Wolfe - placed 29th in 35:34.65.
The race consists of four running legs that make up the six-mile course, with the runners passing a baton to the next runner at 1.5-mile exchanges similar to a relay race in track and field.

HP's next race is at another top meet against largely 5A teams at the Plano Invitational. The meet next Saturday starts at 8:30 a.m. at Jasper High School.

Team Tennis: Scots stellar in openers
Written by Scott Farrell    Monday, 23 August 2010 09:19
There were plenty of matches happening at the HP Outdoor Tennis Center and elsewhere, but the opposition was no match for HP in the season-opening HP-Plano West Fall Team Tournament. The Scots swept their four matches and defended their tournament title while giving up only three sets. HP (4-0) beat Midland (10-0), San Angelo Central (10-1), topped McKinney Boyd in the semifinals 10-2, and then blasted Lubbock Coronado 10-0 in the championship. Coronado was a Class 5A state semifinalist last season.

Lubbock Coronado, which reached the state semifinals last season, is included in the field along with local stalwarts Plano West, Plano, Allen, Coppell and Flower Mound Marcus. Three of the UIL's four regions are represented in the field.

Here are the first-round matchups for Friday and their various locations. HP will host one semifinal and the championship match Saturday at the HP Outdoor Tennis Center at 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
