HP finally found its way over the wall St. Mark's defense put in front of it Sunday, thanks to one last boost from Will Boeing. Boeing, a senior reserve attacker, came off the bench to ignite the Scots' offense by scoring two goals and handing out an assist inside of 90 seconds as the third quarter came to a close. Boeing's burst turned what was a 3-2 HP deficit into a two-goal lead for the Scots, who held on to take a gritty 6-4 win over St. Mark’s in the THSLL Division I championshiop game. HP is now the three-time defending Division I state champion, and the Scots' fifth title in the past seven seasons gives it two more titles (five) than any other THSLL program. HP beat St. Mark's in last year's championship, 7-5. St. Mark's appeared in its third title game of the past four seasons, but has lost all three by two goals. Through two-and-a-half periods, HP's offense had been stagnant, uncharacteristicly misfiring on too many passes and shots to count. St. Mark's endured the same issues, and the two teams who set the THSLL Championships record for goals with 19 in separate semifinals Saturday could only combine for five goals as the third quarter wound down at Highlander Stadium. HP's scoring blast totally changed a physical contest where each team held the other in check. Insert Boeing, who replaced an injured starter in HP's attack. He scored from directly in front of the goal off a quick feed from James Mills with 1:22 left in the period. On the next possession, Boeing went behind the net and found Campbell Powers breaking to the goal with a touch pass with 32 seconds left to give HP the lead. The Scots won the ensuing face-off, and Boeing struck again 18 seconds later with a tight-angle shot almost parallel to the goal on the left side. Boeing was the game’s Offensive Most Valuable Player. "I just stepped in," Boeing said following the game. "Early on we weren't calm at all. Things weren't working. I got an opportunity." The rest of the game belonged to the defenses. HP goalie Jordan Lee was named the game's Most Valuable Player after making nine saves in the first half and 14 total. Lee gave up only five goals in two tournament games. HP’s two-time All-American defender, Chris Hipps, was named the game’s Defensive Most Valuable Player. "This was two teams that know each other very well," Scots head coach Derek Thompson said. "St. Mark's, to their credit, took away our strengths. Players win games, and our guys stepped up and did a phenomenal job. We knew our defense was sound. Offensively, that one run got us going, and Boeing really stepped up for us." Neither team had more than a one-goal lead until Boeing's second goal. Campbell Puckett got HP on the board three minutes in on a reset pass from Chase Prospere. St. Mark's tied it 40 seconds later on the first of Daniel Trevino's two goals. Trevino struck again in the second period. followed soon behind by a Cody Crews goal for HP and a 2-2 tie. Fred Addy’s first goal midway through the third period gave St. Mark’s a 3-2 lead, and relative lull fell over the offenses for six minutes until Boeing hit. "We got together before the fourth quarter on the sideline and coach said they were testing our bond," Lee said of the 18 seniors on the roster. "We've played together for so long and know each other so well. We had to come through." Addy scored again for St. Mark's to make it 5-4 with 10:03 left, but HP found another answer from an unlikely source. Mac Kelly, another reserve midfielder, scored unassisted from the right side less than a minute later to restore the two-goal lead and take some wind out of St. Mark's rally.
