B-Cr. Country: Scots 6th at state
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 13 November 2010 16:01
ROUND ROCK - HP had a high hopes and a tall order in front of it Saturday at the UIL Championships. The Scots, the Region II-4A champions, will look back at their sixth-place finish with smiles later on, but following the race only the sting of not placing higher among some of the beasts of the state's cross country teams was visible on the athletes' faces.

The Scots' 168 points placed them in the top half of the 12-team field at Old Settler's Park. Cedar Park, in its first year of Class 4A after placing third at last year's 5A state meet, won the meet with 48 points by placing three in the top 10 and all five scorers among the top 21 in the team scoring standings.

HP saw its top runner, senior Philip Todd, take 16th place overall and 10th in the team standings, taking away individual finishes from runners not affiliated with the 12 competing teams. Todd crossed in 16:08.25 on the 5,000-meter course.

Todd is expected to announce his commitment as to where he'll run in college in the next two weeks.

Behind Todd was Matt Galvin, another senior who placed 42nd overall and 27th in the team standings. Ben Clapp (58th-41st), Connor Hayward (60th-43rd) and Glenn Wolfe (64th-47th) also had top-50 placings in the team standings to finish out HP's scoring runners. Stephen Ramon (77th-58th) and Max Rosenfeld (83rd-63th) also earned high finishes.

The Scots placed ahead of regional foes Frisco Liberty (eighth) and Rockwall (ninth) again at the state meet, but had ambition for more at the state meet. It was a tough field, with Spring Branch Smithson Valley also in its first year as a 4A school after annual success in 5A. Regions I and IV each had two teams finish among the top five teams.
