Team Tennis: Scots are golden again
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 06 November 2010 18:23
HP made quick work of Boerne Champion at the UIL Championships, sweeping all seven doubles matches to roll to a 10-0 win and a third consecutive state title.

The Scots (24-0) completed another perfect season with an overpowering lineup that didn't yield a match at the state tournament at Lakeway's World of Tennis, and lost only five matches in the entire 2010 postseason (see chart below). The doubles sweep Saturday gave HP a 7-0 lead, and three singles wins by Ford Stainback, Peggy Porter and Kristen Mee were so quick that five of the other singles matches didn't even get underway. Four others were stopped with the match clinched.

The state title is HP's 12th overall and seventh in the last eight years, and ties San Antonio Alamo Heights for the UIL record for most titles won. HP's 23 consecutive state tournament appearances, and 12 consecutive seasons advancing to the state title match, are already UIL records.

HP's win was dominating. But it didn't come without a fight. Champion (21-4), which has lost to HP at the last three UIL Championships in either the semifinals or finals match, put up a challenge in the top doubles matches, with Zach Chu and Ford Stainback of HP having to win a tiebreaker to take the first set before sweeping their No. 1 boys doubles match.

In the No. 2 boys doubles match, HP's John Mee and Luke Stainback edged out a 6-4, 6-4 win. The Scots' Chris Walters and Nico Elwood closed a narrow 7-5 win in the first set of their No. 3 boys doubles match, then rolled to a 6-2 win in the second to sweep.

Peggy Porter and Melanie Marlin beat Champion's top girls doubles team 6-4, 6-3, and John Daesky and Adrienne Fleck broke serve enough in the second set for a 6-2, 6-4 win in mixed doubles.

The rest of the matches also went to the Scots but in straight sets.
