HP swept through all seven doubles matches Friday, which made for an easier romp through singles play and a 10-0 win over Montgomery in the semifinals of the UIL Championships in Lakeway. The win advances the Scots to Saturday's state title match playing at their home-away-from-home at the World of Tennis. This is a record 11th consecutive season that HP has advanced to the state championship match. The Scots' No. 1 girls doubles team of Peggy Porter and Melanie Marlin were the only HP players who saw extended points among the doubles sweep, winning a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6. They came back hard in the second set to sweep 6-0. John Daeske and Adrienne Fleck won a close mixed doubles match, 6-3, 6-4, over Kyle Zagen and Brit Goldman of Montgomery. HP won every other doubles set except one by at least a 6-3 count. The first three singles matches to finish were the clinchers, as Porter won her No. 1 girls match against Cori Bloh, 6-2, 6-0, and Zach Chu and Ford Stainback finished off their No. 1 and No. 2 boys matches in straight sets. Four of the singles matches did not have to start. HP and Montgomery were familiar foes. The Scots topped Montgomery in the state title match last season, and Friday's semifinal win marked the third time in four seasons that HP has defeated Montgomery at the state tournament. The Scots face another well-known opponent Saturday in this year's state title match. HP takes on Boerne Champion (21-3) at 9 a.m. Saturday riding a two-match win streak. HP beat Champion 10-0 in the 2008 state title match, and 10-2 in last year's state semifinals.
