HP's Running Scots tallied another big finish on Saturday, taking second place at the Plano Invitational with a 94 team score among a field dominated by Class 5A schools. Philip Todd placed third in 15:56, marking his first time of the season under 16 minutes. Two other runners - Matt Galvin and Max Rosenfeld - placed in the top 20 with times under 17 minutes. Ben Clapp was 21st in 17:01. All seven Scots placed in the top 64, and outpaced Region II-4A rival Frisco Liberty by two points. Among other regional entries, Mesquite Poteet (150 points) was sixth and Rockwall (165) seventh. "The varsity Gold Elite team did an outstanding job in the highly competitive 5A Division. The highlight of the day was watching our senior captain, Philip Todd, blaze through the 5K course in 15:54," HP coach Randy Adair said. "I am thrilled to see him under 16 (minutes) this early in the year. "Senior captain Matt Galvin is running very, very close to the sub 16 mark and should go under that time real soon. Our goal is to have our top six runners all running sub 17's within the next mesocycle, or 3-4 weeks. As we begin to target high intensity VO2Max training sessions, in addition to our challenging Tempo training, times are guaranteed to drop significantly." HP's entry in the Class 4A race placed eighth overall (202 points) with Ben Glasgow (19:06.08), Jack Hitzelberger (19:13.3) and Andrew Hedges (19:20.1) each claiming top-50 finishes. The Scots' junior varsity was sixth with 220 points led by Brandon Shirk in 18th with a time of 18:44.4. HP's next meet is Saturday at the Samuell Farm in Mesquite as they defend their title at the North Mesquite Stallion Stampede. The Scots should see most of their other regional contenders in that field.
