B-Basketball: HP 4th in Scot Classic
Written by Scott Farrell    Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:37
HP struggled through its annual Scot Classic last weekend, posting a win in the opener but dropping the last two games to settle for fourth place in its annual tournament.

The Scots (2-2 following the tournament) came out hot in the opener against St. Mark's, doubling up the Lions in the first quarter and then maintaining the lead through the remainder. Junior wing David Allen hit a handful of outside jumpers to lead the Scots with 14 points, and senior captain Luke Turpin poured in 13 points with a few slashing drives to the basket.

HP led 26-20 at halftime, and scored a 5-0 burst at the start of the third quarter. A three-pointer by Turpin put HP ahead 33-23, and the Scots maintained their six-point lead from halftime at the end of the quarter.

Senior captain Zach Chu found Turpin underneath on the first possession of the fourth qusarter, and Turpin scored again on a driving jumper in the lane for another quick 4-0 burst to start the fourth quarter.

St. Mark's never found its consistency against HP's man-to-man defense, and HP took advantage on the other end with transition baskets. Allen's put-back on a fast-break ended an HP 6-1 run to put the Scots ahead 43-32. A steal and basket by Turnpin extended the lead to 45-32, and HP sank enough free throws to earn the 10-point win.

It was a different story the following night, or afternoon as it were with HP's semifinal moved back to 4:30 p.m. to accommodate Scots fans wanting to attend the playoff football game that night across the street at Highlander Stadium.

A cold shooting night by the Scots led to disaster in a 55-33 loss to Austin High in the semifinals. HP and Austin, which entered the Scot Classic for a fourth consecutive year, have played a number of times and with narrow results in the series.

Austin ran away quickly in the first half while HP (2-2) managed just 10 points by halftime. The limited good news from the game came from the seven Scots who scored, led by Jon Jessen with nine points and Ben Strodel with eight.

HP got a fine glimpse of its future in Chase Fletcher, a sophomore who scored a season-high 19 points in the Scots' 67-60 loss to Lake Highlands in the third-place game. Turpin scored 13 points, and James Fraschilla and Jessen each had six for the Scots, who dropped to 2-2 on the season.

The Scots take on Ennis on Tuesday night before taking the rest of the holiday week off.

B-Cr. Country: Scots 6th at state
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 13 November 2010 16:01
ROUND ROCK - HP had a high hopes and a tall order in front of it Saturday at the UIL Championships. The Scots, the Region II-4A champions, will look back at their sixth-place finish with smiles later on, but following the race only the sting of not placing higher among some of the beasts of the state's cross country teams was visible on the athletes' faces.

The Scots' 168 points placed them in the top half of the 12-team field at Old Settler's Park. Cedar Park, in its first year of Class 4A after placing third at last year's 5A state meet, won the meet with 48 points by placing three in the top 10 and all five scorers among the top 21 in the team scoring standings.

HP saw its top runner, senior Philip Todd, take 16th place overall and 10th in the team standings, taking away individual finishes from runners not affiliated with the 12 competing teams. Todd crossed in 16:08.25 on the 5,000-meter course.

Todd is expected to announce his commitment as to where he'll run in college in the next two weeks.

Behind Todd was Matt Galvin, another senior who placed 42nd overall and 27th in the team standings. Ben Clapp (58th-41st), Connor Hayward (60th-43rd) and Glenn Wolfe (64th-47th) also had top-50 placings in the team standings to finish out HP's scoring runners. Stephen Ramon (77th-58th) and Max Rosenfeld (83rd-63th) also earned high finishes.

The Scots placed ahead of regional foes Frisco Liberty (eighth) and Rockwall (ninth) again at the state meet, but had ambition for more at the state meet. It was a tough field, with Spring Branch Smithson Valley also in its first year as a 4A school after annual success in 5A. Regions I and IV each had two teams finish among the top five teams.

Team Tennis: Scots are golden again
Written by Scott Farrell    Saturday, 06 November 2010 18:23
HP made quick work of Boerne Champion at the UIL Championships, sweeping all seven doubles matches to roll to a 10-0 win and a third consecutive state title.

The Scots (24-0) completed another perfect season with an overpowering lineup that didn't yield a match at the state tournament at Lakeway's World of Tennis, and lost only five matches in the entire 2010 postseason (see chart below). The doubles sweep Saturday gave HP a 7-0 lead, and three singles wins by Ford Stainback, Peggy Porter and Kristen Mee were so quick that five of the other singles matches didn't even get underway. Four others were stopped with the match clinched.

The state title is HP's 12th overall and seventh in the last eight years, and ties San Antonio Alamo Heights for the UIL record for most titles won. HP's 23 consecutive state tournament appearances, and 12 consecutive seasons advancing to the state title match, are already UIL records.

HP's win was dominating. But it didn't come without a fight. Champion (21-4), which has lost to HP at the last three UIL Championships in either the semifinals or finals match, put up a challenge in the top doubles matches, with Zach Chu and Ford Stainback of HP having to win a tiebreaker to take the first set before sweeping their No. 1 boys doubles match.

In the No. 2 boys doubles match, HP's John Mee and Luke Stainback edged out a 6-4, 6-4 win. The Scots' Chris Walters and Nico Elwood closed a narrow 7-5 win in the first set of their No. 3 boys doubles match, then rolled to a 6-2 win in the second to sweep.

Peggy Porter and Melanie Marlin beat Champion's top girls doubles team 6-4, 6-3, and John Daesky and Adrienne Fleck broke serve enough in the second set for a 6-2, 6-4 win in mixed doubles.

The rest of the matches also went to the Scots but in straight sets.

Team Tennis: HP advances, 10-0
Written by Scott Farrell    Friday, 05 November 2010 17:17
HP swept through all seven doubles matches Friday, which made for an easier romp through singles play and a 10-0 win over Montgomery in the semifinals of the UIL Championships in Lakeway.

The win advances the Scots to Saturday's state title match playing at their home-away-from-home at the World of Tennis. This is a record 11th consecutive season that HP has advanced to the state championship match.

The Scots'  No. 1 girls doubles team of Peggy Porter and Melanie Marlin were the only HP players who saw extended points among the doubles sweep, winning a tiebreaker in the first set, 7-6. They came back hard in the second set to sweep 6-0.

John Daeske and Adrienne Fleck won a close mixed doubles match, 6-3, 6-4, over Kyle Zagen and Brit Goldman of Montgomery. HP won every other doubles set except one by at least a 6-3 count.

The first three singles matches to finish were the clinchers, as Porter won her No. 1 girls match against Cori Bloh, 6-2, 6-0, and Zach Chu and Ford Stainback finished off their No. 1 and No. 2 boys matches in straight sets. Four of the singles matches did not have to start.

HP and Montgomery were familiar foes. The Scots topped Montgomery in the state title match last season, and Friday's semifinal win marked the third time in four seasons that HP has defeated Montgomery at the state tournament.

The Scots face another well-known opponent Saturday in this year's state title match. HP takes on Boerne Champion (21-3) at 9 a.m. Saturday riding a two-match win streak. HP beat Champion 10-0 in the 2008 state title match, and 10-2 in last year's state semifinals.

Team Tennis: HP back at state tourney
Written by Scott Farrell    Sunday, 31 October 2010 22:18
HP had little trouble setting up another state title defense, sweeping through the Region II-4A Championships with four wins while giving up only four sets. The Scots will go for a three-peat next weekend at their home-away-from-home at Lakeway World of Tennis outside Austin.

The Scots (22-0) open the UIL Championships at 9 a.m. Friday, Nov. 5, against Montgomery (16-10). A win there would put HP back in an 11th consecutive state title match against either Boerne Champion (20-3) or Wichita Falls (17-4). HP, winners of six of the last seven UIL Class 4A titles, qualified for the state tournament for a UIL-record 23rd consecutive season, and has done so every year since becoming a Class 4A school in 1988.

HP has won 11 state titles in its history.

Region II-4A Championships Results
(Oct. 29-30 at Grapevine HS)
First round - HP def. Woodrow Wilson, 10-0
Quarterfinals - HP def. Denison, 10-0
Semifinals - HP def. Frisco, 10-1
Championship - HP def. Texarkana Texas, 11-3
